A partial government shutdown wouldn't cancel Christmas, but some of the people making things run smoothly ahead of and after the holiday could be affected.
About a quarter of the federal government is set to close late Friday when funding for nine Cabinet departments and smaller agencies expires. That means about 380,000 employees will be placed on furlough and another 420,000 will be expected to work without pay.

സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെയും ഏജന്‍സികളുടെയും പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിനാവശ്യമായ ധനബില്‍ സെനറ്റില്‍ പാസാകാതിരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് 'ഷട്ട് ഡൗണ്‍' വേണ്ടിവരുന്നത്. ആഭ്യന്തര സുരക്ഷ, എഫ്ബിഐ തുടങ്ങിയ അടിയന്തര സര്‍വീസുകളുടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിന് ആവശ്യമായ പണമാണു പാസാക്കാന്‍ സാധിക്കാതിരുന്നത്.
'ഷട്ട് ഡൗണി'ന്റെ സമയത്ത് 40 ശതമാനത്തോളം പേര്‍ക്കുള്ള ശമ്പളവിതരണം തടസ്സപ്പെടുകയും ജോലി നഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യും. അതേസമയം, സൈനിക മേഖലകളില്‍ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നവരെ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ ബാധിക്കില്ല.
ഒബാമ പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്ന 2013 ല്‍ 16 ദിവസത്തോളം ഭരണകൂടം കനത്ത പ്രതിസന്ധി നേരിട്ടു. അത്രയും ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ ഭരണം നിലച്ച അവസ്ഥയായിരുന്നു. പ്രതിസന്ധി ഉണ്ടായ സമയത്ത് ദേശീയ ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളും സ്മാരകങ്ങളും അടച്ചു പൂട്ടിയത് വലിയ പ്രതിഷേധത്തിന് ഇടയാക്കിയിരുന്നു. ട്രംപ് ഭരണകൂടം ഒരു വര്‍ഷം തികക്കുന്ന സമയത്താണ് ഭരണപ്രതിസന്ധിയെന്നത് റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കന്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടിയെ ആശങ്കയിലാഴ്ത്തുന്നു.
