ഈ കണ്ടെത്തലിന് മൂന്ന് വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുൻപ് സമുദ്രശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്ന റോബര്‍ട്ട് ബെല്ലാര്‍ഡ് നാവികസേനയിലെ ഇന്റലിജന്‍സ് ഓഫീസര്‍ കൂടിയായിരുന്നു. ആഴക്കടലില്‍ നിരീക്ഷണത്തിനായി റിമോട്ട് കണ്‍ട്രോളില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരു യന്ത്രവും അദ്ദേഹം സ്വന്തമായി കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു.
