This rematch of the 2012 Olympic final began with the Dutch team having the majority of possession in front of an electric home crowd. Jeroen Hertzberger opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 19th minute after Jelle Galema's great pacy run down the wing and cross into the centre. The half time score was 1-0.

Germany started stronger at the beginning of the second half and from their first penalty corner in the 55th minute forced a smart save from the Dutch keeper. The final 10 minutes saw a frantic German team desperately trying to score knowing that only a win would really suffice. Three minutes later it was 6-0 thanks to Billy Bakker's great turn and shot low into the corner of the goal. South Africa got a consolation goal in the 62nd minute from a penalty corner through Justin Reid-Ross, but two minutes later the Dutch restored the six goal difference and made it 7-1 with Sander Baart getting on the score sheet with a great solo effort.

The Netherlands nearly grabbed a 4th when a Penalty Corner, shot by Mark van der Weerden, sailed into the net but after a video referral was deemed too high and dangerous and the goal was not given. Argentina had one last chance when Gonzalo Pellat was awarded another Penalty Corner, but Japp Stockman produced a fantastic save, and Netherlands managed to hold their lead and grab the win ending 3-1 to The Netherlands.
