On day one of the Hero Hockey World League Final, reigning world champions Australia met Belgium in a highly anticipated clash. A close game saw Australia win 3-2 with a late winning goal.
Jacob Whetton secured Australia all three points in the opening match of the Hero Hockey World League Final in Delhi. Despite the tenacity of Belgium who fought back twice, the Kookaburras emerged with a 3-2 win. The winning goal was scored with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
The first half started with Australia putting early pressure on the Belgian defence. The Kookaburras remained in control of the ball but they failed to create any meaningful opportunities.
Belgium had their chance to take the lead when the Kookaburras were short-handed after Eddie Ockenden (21') was sent off with a yellow card.
It took up to the 32nd minute until the spectators in the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium saw the first penalty corner. Kieran Govers (33') skilfully scored the opening goal of the Hero Hockey World League.
However, it took Belgium less than one minute to equalise through a shot from a wide angle by Tom Boon (34'). 'We must keep possession, Australia have such a good counter attack', said Red Lions coach Mark Lammers at halftime.
Despite Lammer's warning to his team, the Red Lions ran into another Aussie counter-attack which led to their third penalty corner.

'In the pool match earlier in the tournament, Carlos Retegui's Los Leones ran out winners. However, in the second meeting of the lions, Belgium got their revenge after winning the shoot out 3-1. In regular time the match played out to a 1-1 draw. This means that Belgium have won their first match in the Hero Hockey World League Final and Argentina lost have their second shoot out of the tournament.
In the first half Argentina soaked up the Belgium pressure with goal keeper Vincent Vanash being called into action to make several consecutive saves. The only ball to get past Vanash was a shot from Sebastien Dockier, which hit the post.
Finally, after 25 minutes of unrelenting pressure from Belgium, Argentina broke down play and a quick counter attack led to Matias Rey (31) scoring the opening goal on his 100th cap.
Coach Marc Lammers summed up his team's problem at half time: 'We are playing well, but we have forgotten to score, just like in the other game.'
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Argentina took a more commanding role, with a series of incursions into the Belgium circle, but again it was a counter attack that nearly brought the second goal, with Dockier unlucky to see his shot fly just inches past the Argentine post.
Belgium continued to raise the tempo of the game, and their equaliser came from an own goal in the 56th minute despite a lengthy video referral.

The final match on Day 1 of the Hero Hockey World League saw hosts India take on fourth-ranked England in what turned out to be an unhappy encounter for the home team. A brace by Adam Dixon was the difference between the teams as England emerged 2-0 winners in the Pool A match.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw both teams playing some cagey hockey as they sounded each other out, but then the Indian team raised the tempo, urged on by the noisy and enthusiastic crowd.
Two penalty corners awarded to India amounted to nothing and gradually a lack of goals began to frustrate the home side. England began to play higher up the pitch and, in turn, were rewarded with successive penalty corners. These also came to nothing and both teams struggled to maintain composure in the attacking circle as they sought the all important breakthrough.
That breakthrough came in the last 10 minutes of the first half as Adam Dixon (28') converted from a penalty corner. It was 10 minutes into the second half before the next goal came as, to the crowd's consternation, Dixon (45) found the net again. 12 minutes from time India scored but the goal was disallowed following a successful referral by England.

'A bright start by India threatened to provide the shock of the tournament but Australia showed just why they are world champions by turning a 2-0 deficit into a 7-2 victory at the Hero Hockey World League Final in Delhi.
This fourth quarter final started with a big surprise as host nation India went 2-0 ahead in front of a loudly cheering and very enthusiastic crowd in the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Birenda Lakra (6') opened the scoring when his shot on goal was deflected by an Australian defender's stick. Yuvraj (11') doubled the lead a few minutes later much to the delight of the crowd.
India fought hard to keep ahead of the world champions and their resilience paid off up to the 24th minute when Nicholas Budgeon put the Kookaburras on the scoreboard by smashing in a penalty corner.
Before halftime Jason Wilson's (29') equaliser came from open play and the crowd saw the Kookaburras eventually turning the score around when Glenn Turner (35') made it 3-2 finishing a great team move marking his 100th cap with a goal.
The world champions were dominating throughout the second half. First, it was Russell Ford (41') extending the lead to 4-2. Then Simon Orchard (45') smashed in a shot from the top of the corner making it 5-2. The 6-2 was brought home by Ford (47') scoring his second goal of the day. Jacob Whetton's (65') 7-2 came five minutes before ful

'New Zealand came into this match hoping to reverse the 1-5 defeat at the hands of England in the pool match earlier in the Hero Hockey World League Final. In fact, at full time both teams were level pegging, but Colin Batch's men were cooler in the shoot out and emerged 7-6 winners.
The Black Sticks certainly started the sharper, winning four penalty corners in quick succession but George Pinner, in the England goal, made some sharp saves to keep the ball from the back of the net.
The England defence was breached finally by Marcus Child (12'), who fired a hard shot home from wide of the goal. New Zealand were unlucky not to double that scoreline when an unmarked Simon Child hit the side netting.
England bounced back through after Harry Martin (23') dived full-length to score from a cross from Mark Gleghorne.
The second half was saw a lot of end-to-end action, with both teams playing expansive hockey. Both teams rely on strong defence and quick counter attacks, making it a physical match between two sides.
It was England who took the lead when Gleghorne (49') fired home from the right-hand side of the circle. But New Zealand refused to give up and continued with their attacking style of play, stretching the England defence. The Black Sticks were rewarded with two goals in quick succession, firstly from Stephen Jenness (61') and then Hugo Inglis (62').

It was then up to Dean Couzins to score from the P spot but his shot hit the frame of the goal but it still remained 0-1 to New Zealand at the break.
After the break, the Black Sticks nearly capitalised on a defensive error when Juan Ignacio Gilardi failed to control the ball and Stephen Jenness had a chance to put his team in front but hit the shot wide.
However Argentina finally got there break when Matias Paredes managed to control the ball that was lifted into the circle and with the New Zealand defence unable to clear their lines, and Paredes added a 2nd goal of the tournament levelling the game for his team. However both were unable to take the lead in the end which meant the game would be decided through a Penalty Shoot-out.

Day 5 and it's the first of the Semi-Finals of the day were we see England take on Australia in the first match to decide who will be the first team in the final at the Argentina World Hockey League Tournament.
First Half started off competitive with both teams pushing to grab the early goal in a sold out stadium. It was Australia creating a number of chances, one that was close to going in, but if it wasn't for England Keeper Maddie Hinch stretching her left leg out, we could have seen Ashleigh Nelson put her team ahead. Again Ashleigh Nelson, who was on fine form, was able to beat her defender and unleash a ferocious shot but Hinch again managed to kick the ball out, keeping her team in the game, and keeping the game goalless.
However the first goal came just before Half Time when another Australian Penalty Corner saw the on form Jodie Schulz's dragflick sail straight past the on form keeper, putting her team 0-1. England did get one chance through their first Penalty Corner of the game when Kate Richardson-Walsh shot went agonizingly wide, leaving it at the break 0-1 to Australia.
Second Half saw Australia again come out strong seeing our second goal of the game. Scored by Georgie Parker her shot managed to creep in past the England defense and extend the Australian lead.
It was then all Australia when they grabbed yet another goal, showing there dominance on the game, when an Australian Penalty
