On day one of the Hero Hockey World League Final, reigning world champions Australia met Belgium in a highly anticipated clash. A close game saw Australia win 3-2 with a late winning goal.
Jacob Whetton secured Australia all three points in the opening match of the Hero Hockey World League Final in Delhi. Despite the tenacity of Belgium who fought back twice, the Kookaburras emerged with a 3-2 win. The winning goal was scored with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
The first half started with Australia putting early pressure on the Belgian defence. The Kookaburras remained in control of the ball but they failed to create any meaningful opportunities.
Belgium had their chance to take the lead when the Kookaburras were short-handed after Eddie Ockenden (21') was sent off with a yellow card.
It took up to the 32nd minute until the spectators in the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium saw the first penalty corner. Kieran Govers (33') skilfully scored the opening goal of the Hero Hockey World League.
However, it took Belgium less than one minute to equalise through a shot from a wide angle by Tom Boon (34'). 'We must keep possession, Australia have such a good counter attack', said Red Lions coach Mark Lammers at halftime.
Despite Lammer's warning to his team, the Red Lions ran into another Aussie counter-attack which led to their third penalty corner.

The Kookaburras struggled to create serious opportunities in the early stages while the Dutch took their chances and doubled their lead. Mink van der Weerden's (20') dragflick left the Aussie keeper Tyler Lovell stranded.
Afterwards his counterpart Jaap Stockmann got called into action but he stood strong against the Australian attack. At halftime the Netherlands led 2-0. Coach Paul van Ass said: 'We are not planning to change anything in the second half, if anything we are going to make it tougher. We are certainly not going to become complacent.'
The first Kookaburra goal came out of two minutes of intense Aussie pressure on the Dutch goal and Kieran Govers (42') was able to capitalize on a penalty corner. Five minutes later Russell Ford (47') levelled the score to 2-2 when deflecting a long pass into Stockmann's goal.

First Half started off competitive with both teams pushing to grab the early goal in a sold out stadium. It was Australia creating a number of chances, one that was close to going in, but if it wasn't for England Keeper Maddie Hinch stretching her left leg out, we could have seen Ashleigh Nelson put her team ahead. Again Ashleigh Nelson, who was on fine form, was able to beat her defender and unleash a ferocious shot but Hinch again managed to kick the ball out, keeping her team in the game, and keeping the game goalless.
However the first goal came just before Half Time when another Australian Penalty Corner saw the on form Jodie Schulz's dragflick sail straight past the on form keeper, putting her team 0-1. The final match on Day 1 of the Hero Hockey World League saw hosts India take on fourth-ranked England in what turned out to be an unhappy encounter for the home team. A brace by Adam Dixon was the difference between the teams as England emerged 2-0 winners in the Pool A match.
The first 15 minutes of the game saw both teams playing some cagey hockey as they sounded each other out, but then the Indian team raised the tempo, urged on by the noisy and enthusiastic crowd.
Two penalty corners awarded to India amounted to nothing and gradually a lack of goals began to frustrate the home side. England began to play higher up the pitch and, in turn, were rewarded with successive penalty corners. These also came to nothing and both teams struggled to maintain composure in the attacking circle as they sought the all important breakthrough.
That breakthrough came in the last 10 minutes of the first half as Adam Dixon (28') converted from a penalty corner. It was 10 minutes into the second half before the next goal came as, to the crowd's consternation, Dixon (45) found the net again. 12 minutes from time India scored but the goal was disallowed following a successful referral by England.

'India secured their spot in Saturday's 5th place playoff match after defeating Germany 5-4 in the 5-8 classification game. Rupinder Singh scored from a penalty corner securing India's win in the last minute of the match. The Olympic champions, who had lost their quarter final 3-2 to the Netherlands, opened the scoring thanks to team-captain Oliver Korn (4') picking up a rebound in the Indian circle and hammering it into the goal. Thilo Stralkowski (6') doubled the German lead a couple of minutes later when scoring from a penalty corner. His fourth goal in this competition made the 26-year-old new top scorer for his team.
Mandeep Singh (18') made the home crowd cheer when finishing a promising Indian counter-attack by a successful shot from the top of the circle. However, Benjamin Wess (27') added another one for Germany, securing a 3-1 lead at halftime. 'Getting structure is the key to development in this side. We need to find a way to combine Indian style and flair with technical structure' said Roelant Oltmans, India's director of performance, at halftime.
India got the better start in the second half and shocked the European champions with a double-strike from Rupinder Singh (39') and Mandeep Singh (41') to level the score to 3-3. The host nation came close to taking the lead when a deflected ball hit the German goal post. Mandeep Singh (53') added his third goal of the day when

Netherlands met Argentina on day one of the Hero Hockey World League. A hard-fought game with some excellent hockey saw Argentina win.
The Argentine intent was signalled when they took the lead in just the second minute of the game through a penalty corner, which top scorer Gonzalo Peillat slotted away.
The Netherlands responded immediately with an equally well-taken penalty corner from penalty corner specialist Mink van der Weerden (5'). Three minutes later Argentina reclaimed the lead with a diving conversion by Facundo Callioni (8').
The remainder of the first half was quiet in comparison, with both sides taking a cagey approach. And these defensive tactics continued for the first 15 minutes of the second half. It was the Netherlands who broke the deadlock in the second half when Seve van Ass (50') levelled for the Netherlands. The son of the national coach, Paul van Ass, scored with a reverse stick shot from wide left of the goal.
Six minutes later and Los Leones re-gained their advantage when first Pedro Ibarra (56') shot home from open play and then Guido Barriedes (60') scored a beautifully-taken goal following sustained Argentine pressure.
Argentina further extended their lead when they were awarded and converted a penalty stroke. The scorer on was Juan Ignacio Gilardi (67').
