കാലിഫോർണിയ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഡോ. തോമസ് താന്നിക്കലിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ പഠനം, ‘സയൻസ് ട്രാൻസലേഷണൽ മെഡിസിൻ’ എന്ന ജേണലിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
മനുഷ്യന്റെ തലച്ചോറിൽ ‘ഹിപ്പോെക്രറ്റിൻ’ എന്ന പ്രോട്ടീൻ തന്മാത്രകൾ ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കോശങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഹിപ്പോെക്രറ്റിന്റെ അളവുകുറഞ്ഞാൽ പകൽ ഉറങ്ങിപ്പോവുന്ന രോഗമായ ‘നർക്കോലെപ്‌സി’ ഉണ്ടാവും. വാഹനമോടിക്കുമ്പോഴും ജോലി ചെയ്യുമ്പോഴുമൊക്കെ അസാധാരണമായി ഉറങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്ന അവസ്ഥ. മറ്റൊരു രോഗം ‘കറ്റാപ്ലെക്‌സി’(മോഹാലസ്യം)യാണ്.
ഇതു രണ്ടും വർധിച്ചുവരുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിലായിരുന്നു ഡോ. തോമസിന്റെ പഠനം.
ഹെറോയിനെന്ന മയക്കുമരുന്നിന് അടിമയായ ഒരാളുടെ തലച്ചോറിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കാനിടയായതാണ് ഗവേഷണത്തിൽ വഴിത്തിരിവായത്. അയാളുടെ തലച്ചോറിൽ ഹിപ്പോെക്രറ്റിൻ ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന നാഡീകോശങ്ങൾ കൂടുതലായി കണ്ടു. വിശദമായ പഠനങ്ങൾക്കായി ഹെറോയിന് അടിമകളായ മറ്റുചിലരുടെ തലച്ചോറിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾകൂടി പഠിച്ചു.
ശാസ്ത്രീയ തെളിവുകൾക്കായി എലിയിലായി പരീക്ഷണം.
കറുപ്പിൽനിന്ന് വേർതിരിച്ചെടുക്കുന്ന മോർഫീൻ, എലിയിൽ കുത്തിവെച്ചു. അതിനുശേഷം ഹിപ്പോെക്രറ്റിന്റെ തോത് കൂടുന്നതാണ് കണ്ടത്. മാത്രമല്ല, പരീക്ഷണകാലം കഴിഞ്ഞും അതിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇതോടെയാണ് നർക്കോലെപ്‌സി, കറ്റാപ്ലെക്‌സി എന്നീ രോഗങ്ങൾക്ക് കറുപ്പുപോലുള്ളവയിൽനിന്നുള്ള മരുന്നുകൾ പരിഹാരമാകുമെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. മയക്കുമരുന്നുകൾക്ക് അടിമകളായവരിൽ ഹിപ്പോെക്രറ്റിന്റെ തോത് കുറച്ച് പരിഹാരം കാണാനും സാധ്യതെതളിഞ്ഞു.

തലശേരിയിൽ നെട്ടൂർ ടെക്നിക്കൽ ട്രെയിനിങ് ഫൗണ്ടേഷനിൽ പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന ജർമൻ സ്വദേശികളായ എൻജിനീയർ ഫ്രിറ്റ്സും ഭാര്യ എലിസബത്തും മലേറിയക്കു ചികിത്സ തേടി ലെംബാർഡ് ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തിലെത്തിയത് ആയിടെ. അവർ അവിടെ നിന്നു ദത്തെടുത്തത് ആ കുഞ്ഞിനെയായിരുന്നു.
അമ്മ തിരികെയെത്തുമോയെന്നു കാത്തിരുന്നു 2 വർഷം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ, ഫ്രിറ്റ്സും എലിസബത്തും മലയാളം പത്രങ്ങളിൽ പരസ്യം നൽകി.

Kuwait : In a tragic incident, a fire broke out in a six-storeyed building at Mangaf block in Kuwait's Ahmadi Governorate on Wednesday, killing 41 and injuring at least 40 others. According to reports, 10 Indians, including five Malayalis, were also killed in the fire. Kuwait Deputy Prime Minister Fahad Yusuf Al-Sabah visited the site and ordered a police inquiry into the matter. The minister has ordered stringent action against the building owner.
The fire originated from a kitchen in one of the lower floors within the labour camp at 4.30 am on Wednesday. According to sources, the fire quickly spread to all the rooms in the apartment. A few individuals, who leapt out of the apartment upon noticing the blaze, were killed. Others succumbed to burn injuries and asphyxiation after inhaling smoke. Several people, who were injured in the fire, have been admitted to Adan, Jaber and Mubarak hospitals..

About ASHI, Haryana:
Association for Social Health in India (ASHI) is a Voluntary and Social Organization aiming at challenging those conditions that lead to exploitation of women and children for anti-social purposes by providing shelter for Destitute & Orphan children and arranging for their education, vocational training and rehabilitation are one of the Association’s main activities. The Governor of Haryana, their Chief Patron, visits the Home once a year to encourage and bless the children.
