Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.

So it was that we financed the building of over four lakh kilometers of all-weather rural roads in different states. So it was that we ensured that procurement prices for rice and wheat more than doubled over the last ten years, triggering new prosperity for our kisans. And so it was that very recently, we got the historic Food Security Act passed that will provide highly subsidized food grains to two-third of our population. The central government is committed for the development of Himachal Pradesh and also released huge financial assistance for the state. But the state government did not use the funds sent under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA or the financial aid released for the repair and construction roads properly. The Congress government also had sanctioned huge funds for the development of Shimla under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Rural Mission but there are no changes visible here. I want to ask where thousands of crores of rupees provided by the centre for the development of the state and its people have gone.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi while speaking at the Congress' chintan shivir at Jaipur said 'We must admit that there is increased competition and inroads have been made in our traditional strongholds. There are some states where we have been out of office for too long, and although I do believe that being in power is not the sole purpose of our party but being out of power can have a reverse impact on our morale. In the states where we are in alliance with other parties, there is a need to strike a balance of respect between allies and government policies'.
'From 2004, The UPA Government at the centre under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh, has introduced truly revolutionary programmes and enacted historic legislations throwing out from our manifesto. But in some states the party has not yet been able to benefit from these electorally. I hope this will be discussed and concrete suggestions will emerge from discussions' said Sonia Gandhi.
