Congress President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for a Rs 2,938-crore drinking water supply project at Jayal in Nagaur district of Rajasthan on Thursday. This drinking water project would benefit more than 23 lakh people from nine towns and about 900 villages of Nagaur district. 'Our policies have empowered the poor, adivasis, underprivileged, tribals, minorities and women. We took measures to increase the supporting price for the crops which helped farmers in a big way and as a result the country witnessed record agricultural production' said Sonia Gandhi.

The land mark legislation to guarantee jobs for the poor in the villages, free education for the children upto 14 years, mid-day meal scheme for the school children, facility to avail loan at a lower interest rate for the women through Self Help Groups (SHG) for women, drinking water facilities, electricity in villages under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification scheme, various health care schemes to ensure adequate medical facilities for the poor are some of the achievements of the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre.
