Australia would be the focus country of the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival, slated to be inaugurated by Bollywood’s living legend Amitabh Bachchan in the presence of a galaxy of superstars of Indian cinema including Shah Rukh Khan here on November 10, the organisers announced on Saturday.
A carousal of 171 feature films, 150 shorts and documentaries from 70 countries would be on show at 16 auditoria in the city and Howrah with the 1967 Bengali classic ‘Antony Firingee’ being the inaugural movie of the eight-day festival.
Besides Bachchan, venerable Iranian director Majid Majidi, and Australian directors Simon Baker, Jill Bilcock and Philip Noyce would grace the opening ceremony, to be presided over by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.
Sanjay Dutt, Jaya Bachchan, Wahida Rehman, Nandita Das would also be present at the opening ceremony, said state youth and sports minister and KIFF chief advisor Aroop Biswas.
The best film would be given an award of Rs 51 lakh, and the best director Rs 21 lakh, with both receiving a golden trophy christened “Royal Bengal Tiger”.
He said Antony Firingee, with Uttam Kumar and Tanuja in the lead, was chosen as the inaugural film to mark the 100 years of Bengali cinema.
Twenty six films from Australia would be on show, with Philip Noyce being honoured with a retrospective.

മെയ് 14 ന് ആരംഭിച്ച കുട്ടികളുടെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ചലച്ചിത്രമേള (ഐ.സി.എഫ്.എഫ്.കെ 2018) നാളെ അവസാനിക്കും. സംസ്ഥാന ശിശുക്ഷേമ സമിതിയുടെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില് ചലച്ചിത്ര അക്കാദമി, ചലച്ചിത്ര വികസന കോര്പ്പറേഷന്, ബാലസാഹിത്യ ഇന്സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് എന്നീ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ സഹകരണത്തോടെയാണ് ചലച്ചിത്രോത്സവം സംഘടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ടാഗോര്, കൈരളി, ശ്രീ, നിള, കലാഭവന് എന്നീ അഞ്ച് തിയേറ്ററുകളിലാണ് ചലച്ചിത്രമേള നടക്കുന്നത് . ലോകോത്തര ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങളടക്കം 140 കുട്ടികളുടെ ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങള് പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു . അഞ്ച് തിയേറ്ററുകളില് ദിവസേന നാലു പ്രദര്ശനങ്ങള് വീതം, ഒരു ദിവസം 20 ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങള് പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. , വിദേശീയരും, തദ്ദേശീയരുമായ നാലായിരത്തിലധികം ഡെലിഗേറ്റുകള് ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയില് പങ്കെടുത്തു . സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ആദിവാസി മേഖലയില് നിന്നുള്ള കുട്ടികള് ഉള്പ്പെടെ 800-ഓളം കുട്ടികളെ താമസിപ്പിച്ച് ചലച്ചിത്രമേള കാണുന്നതിന് സൗകര്യം ഒരുക്കിയിരുന്നു . സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ വിവിധ അനാഥാലയങ്ങളില് കഴിയുന്ന 500-ഓളം കുട്ടികള്ക്കും ചലച്ചിത്രോത്സവം കാണാന് അവസരം ഒരുക്കി. പഠിക്കാനും ആസ്വദിക്കാനും കഴിയുന്ന ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ് തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിട്ടുള്ളത്.
സംസ്ഥാന ശിശുക്ഷേമ സമിതിയുടെ കുട്ടികളുടെ രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ മീഡിയ സെൽ ഉദ്ഘാടനം കൈരളി തിയേറ്ററിൽ ഗാനരചയിതാവും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തുമായ ശ്രീകുമാരൻ തമ്പി നിർവഹിച്ചു. സിനിമ -സാഹിത്യ -രാഷ്ട്രീയ മേഖലയിലെ പ്രശസ്തരുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം കുട്ടികള്ക്ക് ആവേശം പകര്ന്നു .ഇടവേളകള് പോലും ആഘോഷമാക്കിയ മേളക്ക് നാളെ തിരശ്ശീല വീഴും
