Demolishing the myth of prosperity and job creation in Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi dubbed the state's growth model as a 'toffee model' where only a few big industrialists exponentially increase their wealth at the expense of the common man and weaker sections of the society, who continue to languish behind.
'In Gujarat, a piece of land as big as the urban area of Aurangabad was given to an industrialist by the Gujarat government for one rupee per square meter. In one rupee, you get toffee, not land. This is not Gujarat model, this is a toffee model,' he said at a massive public rally in Latur adding that only a few industrialists have prospered under the Narendra Modi led Gujarat government.
Rahul Gandhi also dismissed claims of job creation and poverty reduction in the state and highlighted that a model which favours only the rich cannot work for India. 'The BJP says that the Gujarat model has created jobs for the youth. Recently, Gujarat government opened up 1,500 jobs at a salary of merely Rs. 5,000 per month. 8.5 lakh youth lined up for those jobs. If they gave employment, why are 560 people turning up for one job.' he said adding that under this model neither farmers and the poor benefit, nor the small and medium enterprises.

At present, there is a new class emerging - just above the BPL line but below the middle class. Our focus now will be to take this new group to the middle class category.' he said.
Rahul Gandhi also mentioned that everyone is talking about India becoming super power. But India cannot be a super power until we ensure that the 50% of our population -- the women- is empowered.

Rahul Gandhi spoke about the empowerment of women and said that the Congress Party will pass the Bill to introduce 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament when it forms the next government. Linking women to banks and providing them access to credit would be another priority he said because India cannot be a superpower if it did not empower women who form 50 percent of the population. He assured the youth of the state that in the coming months millions of jobs would be created with the building of the dedicated industrial corridors with road and rail connectivity.

The Congress Party released its manifesto more than ten days ago, after wide consultations with people from all over the country. Close to 5 lakh people gave their inputs for the manifesto. Rahul Gandhi himself held close to 40 meetings with different groups, such as rickshaw pullers, farmers, coolies, daily wage labourers, among others, to seek their views and inputs.
