Spain jobs: glimmer of hope or flash in the pan?

Spain's jobless rate fell very slightly in April, by 6,632, but a closer look at the figures shows that was due to seasonal short-term jobs over Easter and overall this was the third worst April ever.

Many of those without jobs emigrated to Spain in the boom years and like Ecuadorian Patricio Rojas see no future there: 'If this crisis lasts a long time I don't doubt that I will leave the country. Spain is really beautiful, but you have to look after your family, your children, and if you don't find work, you know, you will have to go elsewhere. What's left for us to do?'

The Labour Ministry said there were 4.74 million people unemployed in Spain.

But the National Statistics Institute, which questions people in a survey of households, found just 5.6 million out of work.

There are about 1.7 million families in Spain where all the adults are unemployed. Fifty-year old Rosa Maria Aparicio and her husband, are among them.

Their two adult sons are also looking for work. 'It's a question of luck, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. If you find it great, but at the moment it's very difficult,' she said..
