1896 में मशहूर शायर फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी का जन्म हुआ था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी को शायर के अलावा एक लेखक और आलोचक के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। महात्मा गांधी के साथ असहयोग आंदोलन में शामिल होने के लिए फ़िराक़ ने प्रशासनिक सेवा से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी ने उर्दू में गज़ल, नज़्म और रुबाइयां लिखी हैं, वहीं साहित्य और संस्कृति से जुड़े विषयों पर इन्होंने इंग्लिश में चार किताबें भी लिखी हैं। 1960 में गोरखपुरी को साहित्य अकादमी और 1968 में पद्म भूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया। इनकी किताब गुल-ए-नग़मा के लिए इन्हें 1969 में ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया।
1913 में भोपाल रियासत की राजकुमारी और भारत की पहली महिला पायलट आबिदा सुल्तान का जन्म हुआ था। उपमहाद्वीप की मुस्लिम राजनीति में सक्रिय भूमिका अदा करने वाली आबिदा ने अपने पिता हमीदुल्लाह ख़ान की कैबिनेट के अध्यक्ष और मुख्य सचिव की ज़िम्मेदारी संभाली थी। 1949 में वह अखिल भारतीय महिला स्क्वैश की चैंपियन भी थीं। आबिदा सुल्तान के बेटे शहरयार मोहम्मद ख़ान 1990 में पाकिस्तान के विदेश सचिव भी रह चुके हैं।

1936 में मशहूर गीतकार गुलज़ार का जन्म हुआ था। इनका पूरा नाम संपूर्ण सिंह कालरा है। इनकी मुख्य रचनाएं हिन्दी, उर्दू और पंजाबी में मिलती हैं। गुलज़ार ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत 1961 में निर्देशक बिमल रॉय के सहायक के रूप में की। गुलज़ार ने ऋषिकेश मुखर्जी और हेमन्त कुमार के सहायक के तौर पर भी काम किया। इनके गीत 'ऐ मेरे प्यारे वतन, ऐ मेरे बिछड़े चमन, तुझ पे दिल कुर्बान' और 'गंगा आए कहां से, गंगा जाए कहां से' को बेहद पसंद किया गया। इन्होंने कई फिल्मों का निर्देशन भी किया, जिनमें मेरे अपने, परिचय, अचानक, मौसम, इजाज़त, लिबास, आदि मशहूर फिल्में हैं। 2009 में डैनी बॉयल निर्देशित फ़िल्म स्लमडॉग मिलियनेयर में इनके लिखे गीत 'जय हो..' के लिए गुलजार को सर्वश्रेष्ठ गीत के ऑस्कर पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गया और इसी गीत के लिए ग्रैमी पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया। 2013 में गुलज़ार को दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

1941 में मशहूर अभिनेत्री साधना शिवदासानी का जन्म हुआ था। साधना ने अपने फिल्मी करियर की शुरुआत फिल्म 'अबाणा' से की थी। अपने बालों की स्टाइल की वजह से साधना बहुत पसंद की गईँ और उनका यह हेयर स्टाइल साधना कट के नाम से जाना जाता है। 'लव इन शिमला', 'मेरे महबूब', 'आरज़ू', 'वक़्त', 'मेरा साया', 'इश्क पर ज़ोर नहीं', 'परख', 'प्रेमपत्र', 'गबन', 'एक फूल दो माली' और 'गीता मेरा नाम' आदि इनकी बेहतरीन फिल्में हैं। 2002 में साधना को अंतरराष्ट्रीय भारतीय फ़िल्म अकादमी यानी आईफा की ओर से लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गया।
1945 में दूसरे विश्व युद्ध के दौरान जापान ने बिना किसी शर्त आत्मसमर्पण किया था। जापानी अधिकारियों ने मित्र सेनाओं के क़रीब 50 जनरलों और उच्चाधिकारियों की मौजूदगी में आत्मसमर्पण के कागज़ातों पर दस्तख़त किए और इसी के साथ छह वर्षों से चल रहा दूसरा विश्व युद्ध औपचारिक रूप से ख़त्म हो गया। छह अगस्त को अमेरिका ने युद्ध के दौरान मानव इतिहास में पहली बार जापान के हिरोशिमा शहर में परमाणु बम गिराया था। दूसरा बम तीन दिन बाद नागासाकी शहर पर गिराया गया। जापान के सम्राट हिरोहितो ने युद्ध के दौरान जापानी अधिकारियों और सैनिकों की ओर से किए गए सारे अपराधों की ज़िम्मेदारी खुद लेने का प्रस्ताव किया, लेकिन यह प्रस्ताव पारित नहीं हुआ।

1913 में मशहूर तिलिस्मी लेखक देवकीनन्दन खत्री का निधन हुआ था। चंद्रकांता, चंद्रकांता संतति, भूतनाथ, काजर की कोठरी, नरेंद्र-मोहिनी आदि इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं। इनके उपन्यास 'चंद्रकांता' ने हिन्दी भाषा के प्रचार-प्रसार में अहम योगदान दिया। 1898 में खत्री ने अपना निजी प्रेस खोला, जिसका नाम लहरी प्रेस रखा। देवकीनन्दन ने उपन्यासों में कई अय्यारों और पात्रों के नाम अपने दोस्तों के नाम पर रखे। इस तरह से उन्होंने अपने कई घनिष्ट मित्रों और संगी साथियों को अपनी रचनाओं से अमर बना दिया।
1932 में बॉलीवुड में ट्रेजेडी क्वीन के नाम से पुकारी जाने वाली मीना कुमारी का जन्म हुआ था। मीना कुमारी का असली नाम महजबीन बानो था। 1939 में बतौर बाल कलाकार मीना कुमारी ने विजय भट्ट की फ़िल्म 'लेदरफेस' से अपने करियर की शुरुआत की थी। बॉलीवुड में अपनी पहचान तलाशती मीना कुमारी ने लगभग दस वर्षों तक संघर्ष किया। इस बीच उन्होंने 'वीर घटोत्कच' और 'श्री गणेश महिमा' जैसी फ़िल्मों में काम किया, लेकिन दर्शकों के दिलों में अपनी छाप छोड़ने में कामयाब नहीं रहीं। 1952 में मीना को विजय भट्ट के निर्देशन में बनी फ़िल्म 'बैजू बावरा' में काम करने का मौक़ा मिला। इस फ़िल्म की सफलता के बाद मीना बतौर अभिनेत्री फ़िल्म जगत में अपनी पहचान बनाने में सफल रहीं। 'फूल और पत्थर', 'साहेब बीबी और ग़ुलाम', ‘परिणीता’, ‘पाकीज़ा’, ‘दिल एक मंदिर’, ‘बंधन’ आदि इनकी नायाब फ़िल्में हैं।

1978 में तीन अमरीकियों ने हॉट एयर बैलून से अटलांटिक महासागर को पार किया था। बेन अबरूज़ो, लैरी न्यूमैन और मैक्स एंडरसन को अटलांटिक महासागर पार करने में छह दिन का समय लगा था। छह दिन बाद बैलून ने फ़्रांस की राजधानी पेरिस में लैंडिग की। अटलांटिक महासागर को पार करने का यह इन तीनों का दूसरा प्रयास था, एक वर्ष पहले इन तीनों ने कोशिश की थी, लेकिन अटलांटिक महासागर पार करने में नाकाम रहे।
1982 में मशहूर साहित्यकार फ़ादर कामिल बुल्के का निधन हुआ था। 'यूवेन विश्वविद्यालय' से अभियांत्रिकी की शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद यह 1935 में भारत आए। सबसे पहले इन्होंने भारत का भ्रमण किया और भारत की संस्कृति का अच्छे से अध्ययन किया। कुछ समय के लिए बुल्के दार्जिलिंग में भी रहे और उसके बाद रांची और झारखंड के गुमला ज़िले के 'इग्नासियस विद्यालय' में गणित का अध्यापन करने लगे। यहीं इन्होंने भारतीय भाषाएं सीखनी शुरू कीं और उनके मन में हिन्दी भाषा सीखने की ललक पैदा हुई। रामकथा उत्पत्ति और विकास, अंग्रेज़ी-हिन्दी शब्दकोश, मुक्तिदाता, नया विधान, हिन्दी-अंग्रेजी लघुकोश, बाइबिल का हिन्दी अनुवाद आदि इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं। 1974 में फादर कामिल को पद्म भूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया।

1666 में छत्रपति शिवाजी आगरा में फलों की टोकरी में छिपकर औरंगजेब की कैद से फरार हुए थे। मराठा राजा छत्रपति शिवाजी और उनके पुत्र को मुग़ल शासक औरंगजेब ने आगरा के किले में कैद कर लिया था। रतनगढ़ के किले और मंदिर में मिले अभिलेखों के मुताबिक इसी दौरान समर्थ गुरू रामदास ने शिवाजी व उनके पुत्र को यहां से रणनीति बनाकर आज़ाद कराया था। गुरु रामदास की योजना के मुताबिक, औरंगजेब को भेंट के तौर पर फलों की टोकरियां भिजवाई जाती थीं। गुरूजी ने भी यह सिलसिला अपने एक भक्त के जरिए शुरू कराया। मुगल सेना का विश्वास जीतने के बाद उस भक्त ने एक दिन दो बड़ी टोकरियां भेजीं। खाली होने के बाद इन टोकरियों में शिवाजी और उनके पुत्र को बिठा कर बाहर लाया गया।
1918 को भोपाल में भारत के नवें राष्ट्रपति शंकर दयाल शर्मा का जन्म हुआ था । इनके पिता 'श्री खुशीलाल शर्मा' एक वैद्य थे। शंकरदयाल शर्मा मध्य प्रदेश के पहले ऐसे व्यक्ति रहे, जो अपनी विद्वता, सुदीर्घ राजनीतिक समझबूझ, समर्पण और देश-प्रेम के बल पर भारत के राष्ट्रपति बने। इन्होंने 'भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम' में मुख्य रूप से भाग लिया था। शंकरदयाल शर्मा ने 1992 में भारत के सर्वोच्च पद राष्ट्रपति का कार्यभार ग्रहण किया था।

1911 में अमेरिका के न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स के दफ्तर से पहला टेलीग्राम भेजा गया, जो पूरी दुनिया में पहुंचा। यह संदेश एक तरह का टेस्ट मेसेज था। अख़बार यह देखना चाहता था कि किसी व्यावसायिक संदेश सेवा के इस्तेमाल से भेजा गया टेलीग्राफ केबल या तार के जरिए पूरी दुनिया में कोई संदेश कितनी तेज़ी से पहुंचाया जा सकता है। इस पहले तार में केवल इतना लिखा था कि, 'यह संदेश पूरी दुनिया में भेजा गया।' आज ही के दिन शाम 7 बजे इस तार ने न्यूयॉर्क स्थित दफ्तर की 17वीं मंजिल का डिस्पैच रूम छोड़ा था। यहां से क़रीब 28 हज़ार मील की यात्रा करने और 16 अलग-अलग ऑपरेटरों की ओर से संदेश को रिले किए जाने के क़रीब साढ़े सोलह मिनट बाद न्यूयॉर्क स्थित इसी जगह पर तार वापस मिला। इस बीच यह टेलीग्राम सैन फ्रांसिस्को, फिलीपींस, हॉन्ग-कॉन्ग, साइगोन, बांबे, माल्टा, लिस्बन और कई दूसरी जगहों पर मिल चुका था। 1900 में शुरू हुई पेसिफिक केबल के सेवा में आने के 11 वर्षों बाद पहली बार इतनी तेज गति से कोई संदेश दुनिया में एक जगह से दूसरी जगह तक पहुंचा था।
1917 में मशहूर साहित्यकार त्रिलोचन शास्त्री का जन्म हुआ था। शास्त्रीजी बाज़ारवाद के प्रबल विरोधी थे। हालांकि उन्होंने हिन्दी में प्रयोगधर्मिता का समर्थन किया। उनका मानना था, 'भाषा में जितने प्रयोग होंगे, वह उतनी ही समृद्ध होगी।' त्रिलोचन शास्त्री ने हमेशा ही नवसृजन को बढ़ावा दिया। यह नए लेखकों के लिए उत्प्रेरक थे। 'गुलाब और बुलबुल', 'उस जनपद का कवि हूं', 'ताप के ताये हुए दिन', 'तुम्हें सौंपता हूं' और 'मेरा घर' आदि इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं। 1982 में त्रिलोचन को साहित्य अकादमी सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया।

The Governor of Haryana, their Chief Patron, visits the Home once a year to encourage and bless the children.
