1666 में छत्रपति शिवाजी आगरा में फलों की टोकरी में छिपकर औरंगजेब की कैद से फरार हुए थे। मराठा राजा छत्रपति शिवाजी और उनके पुत्र को मुग़ल शासक औरंगजेब ने आगरा के किले में कैद कर लिया था। रतनगढ़ के किले और मंदिर में मिले अभिलेखों के मुताबिक इसी दौरान समर्थ गुरू रामदास ने शिवाजी व उनके पुत्र को यहां से रणनीति बनाकर आज़ाद कराया था। गुरु रामदास की योजना के मुताबिक, औरंगजेब को भेंट के तौर पर फलों की टोकरियां भिजवाई जाती थीं। गुरूजी ने भी यह सिलसिला अपने एक भक्त के जरिए शुरू कराया। मुगल सेना का विश्वास जीतने के बाद उस भक्त ने एक दिन दो बड़ी टोकरियां भेजीं। खाली होने के बाद इन टोकरियों में शिवाजी और उनके पुत्र को बिठा कर बाहर लाया गया।
1918 को भोपाल में भारत के नवें राष्ट्रपति शंकर दयाल शर्मा का जन्म हुआ था । इनके पिता 'श्री खुशीलाल शर्मा' एक वैद्य थे। शंकरदयाल शर्मा मध्य प्रदेश के पहले ऐसे व्यक्ति रहे, जो अपनी विद्वता, सुदीर्घ राजनीतिक समझबूझ, समर्पण और देश-प्रेम के बल पर भारत के राष्ट्रपति बने। इन्होंने 'भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम' में मुख्य रूप से भाग लिया था। शंकरदयाल शर्मा ने 1992 में भारत के सर्वोच्च पद राष्ट्रपति का कार्यभार ग्रहण किया था।.
1896 में मशहूर शायर फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी का जन्म हुआ था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी को शायर के अलावा एक लेखक और आलोचक के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। महात्मा गांधी के साथ असहयोग आंदोलन में शामिल होने के लिए फ़िराक़ ने प्रशासनिक सेवा से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी ने उर्दू में गज़ल, नज़्म और रुबाइयां लिखी हैं, वहीं साहित्य और संस्कृति से जुड़े विषयों पर इन्होंने इंग्लिश में चार किताबें भी लिखी हैं। 1960 में गोरखपुरी को साहित्य अकादमी और 1968 में पद्म भूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया। इनकी किताब गुल-ए-नग़मा के लिए इन्हें 1969 में ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया।
1913 में भोपाल रियासत की राजकुमारी और भारत की पहली महिला पायलट आबिदा सुल्तान का जन्म हुआ था। उपमहाद्वीप की मुस्लिम राजनीति में सक्रिय भूमिका अदा करने वाली आबिदा ने अपने पिता हमीदुल्लाह ख़ान की कैबिनेट के अध्यक्ष और मुख्य सचिव की ज़िम्मेदारी संभाली थी। 1949 में वह अखिल भारतीय महिला स्क्वैश की चैंपियन भी थीं। आबिदा सुल्तान के बेटे शहरयार मोहम्मद ख़ान 1990 में पाकिस्तान के विदेश सचिव भी रह चुके हैं।

1639 को ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी ने विजयनगर के राजा पेडा वेंकट राय से कोरोमंडल तट चंद्रगिरी में ज़मीन खरीदी थी। ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के आने से पहले मद्रास महत्त्वपूर्ण राजवंशों पल्लव, चोल, पांड्य और विजयनगर की प्रशासनिक, सैनिक और आर्थिक गतिविधियों का प्रमुख केन्द्र हुआ करता था। वेंकट राय ने अंग्रेज़ी व्यापारियों को यहां एक फैक्ट्री और गोदाम बनाने की अनुमति दी। एक वर्ष बाद ब्रिटिश व्यापारियों ने यहां सेंट जॉर्ज किला बनवाया, जो औपनिवेशिक गतिविधियों का गढ़ बना। 1746 में मद्रास और सेंट जॉर्ज के किले पर फ्रांसीसी फौजों ने अपना कब्ज़ा जमा लिया, जिसे बाद में ब्रितानी कंपनी ने 1749 में एक्स ला शापेल सन्धि के तहत हासिल कर लिया। अठारहवीं सदी के अंत तक ब्रिटिशों ने सेंट जॉर्ज और आसपास के इलाके का विस्तार कर लगभग पूरे आधुनिक तमिलनाडु, आंध्र प्रदेश और कर्नाटक को अपने अधीन कर लिया। इसके साथ ही उन्होंने मद्रास प्रेसिडेंसी की स्थापना की और मद्रास को यहां की राजधानी घोषित कर दिया।

1944 में मशहूर अभिनेत्री सायरा बानो का जन्म हुआ था। 17 साल की उम्र में सायरा बानो ने अपने कैरियर की शुरुआत की। 1961 में रिलीज़ हुई फ़िल्म ‘जंगली’ में पहली बार वह शम्मी कपूर के साथ पर्दे पर नजर आईं। इस फ़िल्म के लिए उन्हें सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री के फ़िल्मफेयर पुरस्कार के लिए नामांकित किया गया। 60 से 70 के दशक में सायरा बानो एक सफल अभिनेत्री के रूप में बॉलीवुड में जगह बना चुकी थीं। 1968 की फ़िल्म ‘पड़ोसन’ ने उन्हें दर्शकों के बीच बेहद लोकप्रिय बना दिया। हेराफेरी, ब्लफ़ मास्टर, पैसे की गुड़िया, गोपी, विक्टोरिया नं 203 आदि इनकी प्रमुख फ़िल्में हैं।
1975 में मशहूर शास्त्रीय गायक विनायकराव पटवर्धन का निधन हुआ था। संगीत की शुरुआती शिक्षा इन्होंने अपने चाचा श्री केशवराव से ली थी। विनायकराव ने 9 वर्ष की उम्र से पं. विष्णुदिगंबर पलुस्कर से शिक्षा लेना शुरू किया। इन्होंने बालगंधर्व की नाटक मंडली में काम किया। 1932 में विनायकराव ने 'गंधर्व महाविद्यालय' की स्थापना की। 1972 में इन्हें पद्म भूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया।
1979 में ईरान में मौजूद कुर्द नागरिकों ने इराक़ी सीमा क्षेत्र पर मौजूद सरकारी सैनिकों के ख़िलाफ विद्रोह किया था। ईरान के उत्तरी-पश्चिमी भाग में कुर्दिस्तान के महाबाद नाम के शहर पर कुर्द विद्रोहियों ने क़ब्ज़ा हासिल कर लिया था। यह विद्रोह धीरे-धीरे दीवान दारेह, साक़ेज़ शहरों में भी फैल गया। दरअसल, ईरान में मौजूद क़रीब 40 लाख कुर्द नागरिक, शाह को देश से निकाले जाने से निराश थे और उनका कहना था कि इस्लामी राज्य बनने के बाद उन्हें ज़्यादा स्वायत्ता नहीं मिल पाई।

1886 में साहित्यकार मैथिलीशरण गुप्त का जन्म हुआ था। महावीर प्रसाद द्विवेदी की प्रेरणा से मैथिलीशरण ने खड़ी बोली को अपनी रचनाओं का आधार बनाया। विनोबा भावे के सम्पर्क में आकर गुप्तजी गांधीवादी पक्ष और सुधारवादी आंदोलनों के समर्थक बने। 1936 में गांधी जी ने इन्हें राष्ट्रकवि की उपाधि से सम्मानित किया था। इन्होंने आज़ादी आंदोलन में सक्रियता से भाग लिया और कई बार जेल भी गए। भारत सरकार ने उनकी सेवाओं को देखते हुए इन्हें दो बार राज्यसभा की सदस्यता प्रदान की थी। पंचवटी, साकेत, जयद्रथ वध, भारत-भारती, यशोधरा, द्वापर, झंकार, जयभारत इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं। मैथिलीशरण गुप्त को पद्मभूषण अलंकार, हिन्दुस्तानी अकादमी पुरस्कार सहित कई अन्य सम्मानों से नवाज़ा गया था।
1957 में अब्दुल रहमान को मलेशिया का नया नेता चुना गया था, जिनके नेतृत्व में मलेशिया ने ब्रिटेन से स्वतंत्रता हासिल की। ब्रिटेन में शिक्षा पाने वाले अब्दुल रहमान वैसे तो राज परिवार से आते थे, लेकिन उन्हें हमेशा आम आदमी का नेता कहा जाता था। 1957 में ब्रिटेन से आज़ादी मिलने के बाद अब्दुल रहमान ने देश में कई तरह के सुधार किए। अब्दुल रहमान ने 1963 में सबाह, सरावक और सिंगापुर के साथ मिलकर मलय को मलेशिया का नाम दिया गया, लेकिन सिर्फ़ दो साल के बाद सिंगापुर इससे अलग हो गया। 1969 में राजधानी कुआलालम्पुर में चीनी मूल और मलय जाति के लोगों के बीच भीषण हिंसक संघर्ष हुआ, जिसमें लगभग दो हज़ार चीनी मूल के प्रदर्शनकारी मारे गए थे। राज्य में आपातकाल की घोषणा कर दी गई थी

1456 में जर्मनी में छापामशीन से बाइबिल की पहली प्रति छापी गई, जिसे गुटेनबर्ग बाइबिल के नाम से जाना जाता है। गुटेनबर्ग ने बाइबिल की 300 प्रतियां प्रकाशित कर पेरिस और फ्रांस देशों को भेजीं। गुटेनबर्ग बाइबिल लैटिन भाषा में छपी थी। 1847 में गुटेनबर्ग बाइबिल की पहली प्रति एक अमेरिकी नागरिक के साथ अमेरिका पहुंची। बाइबिल की पहली प्रति को आज भी न्यूयॉर्क पब्लिक लाइब्रेरी में देखा जा सकता है। 1439 में योहानेस गुटेनबर्ग ने सबसे पहले प्रिंटिंग मशीन बनाई थी। इसके करीब सौ वर्षों पहले चीन में लकड़ी के गुटकों से प्रिंटिंग और घूमने वाली छपाई मशीन का प्रयोग हो रहा था, लेकिन गुटेनबर्ग की छपाई मशीन उनसे अलग थी। गुटेनबर्ग की तकनीक से बनी छपाई मशीन जल्द ही पूरे यूरोप और बाद में पूरे संसार में प्रयोग की जाने लगी।
1908 में मशहूर क्रांतिकारी राजगुरु का जन्म हुआ था। क्रांतिकारी शहीद-ए-आज़म भगत सिंह , सुखदेव और राजगुरु तीनों दोस्त थे। यह तीनों एक साथ मिलकर देश में फैले अग्रेंज़ी शासन को ख़त्म करना चाहते थे। 1928 में लाला लाजपत राय की मौत का बदला लेने के लिए सुखदेव ,राजगुरू और भगत सिंह ने अंग्रेज़ पुलिस अधिकारी जेपी सांडर्स की हत्या कर दी थी। जिसके लिए इन तीनों को 23 मार्च 1931 को फांसी दे दी गई।

1929 में सुरों के बेताज बादशाह किशोर कुमार का जन्म हुआ था। इनका नाम आभास कुमार था, लेकिन फ़िल्मी दुनिया में कदम रखने के साथ इन्होंने ख़ुद का नाम किशोर कुमार रख लिया। 1946 में किशोर कुमार ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत एक अभिनेता के रूप में फ़िल्म 'शिकारी' से की थी। इसके बाद 'बाप रे बाप', 'नई दिल्ली' और 'चलती का नाम गाड़ी' फ़िल्मों में किशोर कुमार ने काम किया। भले ही किशोर कुमार ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत अभिनेता के रूप में की हो, लेकिन वो हमेशा से ही एक पार्श्व गायक बनना चाहते थे। 'पांच रुपैया बारह आना', या फिर 'एक लड़की भीगी भागी सी' गानों को कौन भूल सकता है। ‘आ चल के तुझे मैं ले के चलूं’, 'रूप तेरा मस्ताना', ‘दिल ऐसा किसी ने मेरा तोड़ा’, ‘खाइके पान बनारस वाला’, ‘जिंदगी का सफर’, इनके सुरों के एक से बढ़कर एक नायाब नमूने हैं। 1946 से 1987 तक किशोर कुमार ने करीब 1,500 गीत गाए, साथ ही इन्होंने 81 फ़िल्मों में अभिनय किया और 18 फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन भी किया। फ़िल्म 'पड़ोसन' में उन्होंने जिस मस्त मौला आदमी के किरदार को निभाया वही किरदार अपनी असली ज़िंदगी में निभाते रहे। किशोर कुमार को मेल प्लेबैक सिंगिंग के लिए आठ बार फिल्म फेयर अवॉर्ड से नवाज़ा गया था।
1961 में अमेरिका के पहले अश्वेत राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा का जन्म हुआ था। इनका पूरा नाम बराक हुसैन ओबामा है। ओबामा अमेरिका के 44वें राष्ट्रपति हैं।
