Guwahati's shame: 20 men seen molesting girl, just three arrested
Guwahati: For nearly 30 minutes, a Class 11 student was molested outside a pub in Guwahati by a group of nearly 20 men. After a video of the incident uploaded on YouTube went viral, the government and the police were forced to take action. On Monday night, the police rescued the girl and handed her over to her parents, but did not make any arrests.
Three people were arrested two days after the atrocity but many still remain free. BJP leader Sushma Swaraj tweeted 'we will not let this go unpunished' and said Mrs Bijoya Chakravarty, the party MP from Guwahati, had met the Director General of Police this evening.
The victim was molested when she was returning home after a party at a city bar on Monday. The amateur video shows the mob, consisting of around 20 men, beating the girl before stripping her.
The three people arrested by the police have been charged with trying to outrage the modesty of a girl.
'Three people have been arrested and three others are evading arrest. They, however, have been identified,' Apurba Barua, Senior Superintendent of Police, Assam Police, told NDTV.
The rate of crime against women in Assam is 36.9 per lakh - almost double of the national average of 18.9..

A 16-year-old girl was molested, groped and beaten in full public view by a mob in Guwahati, triggering widespread protests.
The protestors put up posters of the culprits across the city even as an embarrassed police department is working overtime to hunt the accused. So far, four persons have been arrested while at least eight others are still at large.
The girl, who is pursuing studies in fashion designing in Delhi, was attacked when she was returning home after celebrating the birthday of her friend at a bar. She was subjected to assault and molestation for nearly half an hour before being rescued by passers-by.
“At least 12 persons were involved in the incident. We have identified 11 of them, of which four have been arrested,” director general of police JN Choudhury told DNA. He expressed confidence that the remaining accused would be arrested within a week.
The kingpin of the mob, Amarjyoti Kalita, is believed to have gone underground outside the state. Ironically, Kalita had fought crime against women in a TV programme, in which he played the role of a police officer.
However, RTI activist Akhil Gogoi claimed that main perpetrator was a local TV journalist. “When the girl was coming out of the bar, the journalist made an indecent proposal to her. When she spurned his proposal, he instigated the mob and the entire events of assault and molestation followed,” Gogoi told journalists on Friday.

A man in Karnataka was made to wear a skirt, garland of slippers, and shave off half his hair and moustache for allegedly molesting a girl. The accused, Shankar Rathod, was punished by a mob after he held his cousin’s daughter’s hand in a drunken state.
Rathod was paraded in skirt and garland of slippers from his home to the village square. Shankar and his cousin, Umaraj, have lodged FIRs of molestation and harassment against each other.
According to reports, the incident took place on 12 July but has been gone viral on social media recently.
