A 16-year-old girl was molested, groped and beaten in full public view by a mob in Guwahati, triggering widespread protests.
The protestors put up posters of the culprits across the city even as an embarrassed police department is working overtime to hunt the accused. So far, four persons have been arrested while at least eight others are still at large.

The girl, who is pursuing studies in fashion designing in Delhi, was attacked when she was returning home after celebrating the birthday of her friend at a bar. She was subjected to assault and molestation for nearly half an hour before being rescued by passers-by.

“At least 12 persons were involved in the incident. We have identified 11 of them, of which four have been arrested,” director general of police JN Choudhury told DNA. He expressed confidence that the remaining accused would be arrested within a week.

The kingpin of the mob, Amarjyoti Kalita, is believed to have gone underground outside the state. Ironically, Kalita had fought crime against women in a TV programme, in which he played the role of a police officer.

However, RTI activist Akhil Gogoi claimed that main perpetrator was a local TV journalist. “When the girl was coming out of the bar, the journalist made an indecent proposal to her. When she spurned his proposal, he instigated the mob and the entire events of assault and molestation followed,” Gogoi told journalists on Friday.
