1954 में पद्म विभूषण सम्मान की स्थापना की गई थी। पद्म विभूषण सम्मान भारत सरकार द्वारा दिया जाने वाला दूसरा उच्च नागरिक सम्मान है, जो देश के लिए असैनिक क्षेत्रों में बहुमूल्य योगदान के लिए दिया जाता है। यह सम्मान भारत के राष्ट्रपति द्वारा दिया जाता है। यह सम्मान भारत रत्न के बाद दूसरा प्रतिष्ठित सम्मान है। पद्म विभूषण के बाद तीसरा नागरिक सम्मान पद्म भूषण है। यह सम्मान किसी भी क्षेत्र में विशिष्ट और उल्लेखनीय सेवा के लिए प्रदान किया जाता है। इसमें सरकारी कर्मचारियों द्वारा की गई सेवाएं भी शामिल हैं।

1873 में यूरोपीय शासक नेपोलियन बोनापार्ट तृतीय का निधन हुआ था। 1815 में जब नेपोलियन प्रथम का शासन खत्म हुआ, तो वह अपनी मां के साथ स्विट्जरलैंड चले गए थे, लेकिन सत्ता दोबारा हासिल करने की बात हमेशा लुई नेपोलियन के दिमाग में रही, इसलिए 1832 में उन्होंने संघर्ष शुरू किया और खुद को लोगों के सामने लाने के लिए राजनीति और सैन्य मामलों पर कई लेख लिखने शुरू कर दिए। उनकी कोशिशें विफल होने की वजह से 1846 में उन्हें देश छोड़ कर इंग्लैंड जाना पड़ा। 1848 की क्रांति के बाद 1850 में लुई नेपोलियन तृतीय फ्रांसीसी गणराज्य के पहले राष्ट्रपति चुने गए, लेकिन 1870 में फ्रांस के प्रशिया के साथ युद्ध में उनकी हार हुई। इसके बाद उन्हें बंदी बनाकर कुछ महीने जर्मनी में रखा गया और उसके बाद इंग्लैंड भेज दिया गया।
1915 में महात्मा गांधी करीब 21 साल तक दक्षिण अफ्रीका में रहने के बाद मुंबई पहुंचे थे। गांधीजी अपनी पत्नी कस्तूरबा के साथ ‘‘एसएस अरबिया’’ जहाज से भारत वापस आए थे। जहाज की अगवानी के लिए नवनिर्मित गेटवे आफ इंडिया से एक छोटा लांच नौका रवाना हुई थी, जिसमें मुंबई के कई मशहूर नागरिक सवार थे। महात्मा गांधी ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका में भारतीय और अश्वेत लोगों पर जुल्म के खिलाफ आवाज उठाई और वहीं से प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने भारत में स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन को चलाने की ठानी।

1962 में पेरू के उत्तरी-पश्चिमी पहाड़ी इलाके में पत्थरों और बर्फ़ की बड़ी-बड़ी चट्टानों के सरकने से कई गांव और शहर दब गए थे, जिसमें कम से कम दो हज़ार लोगों की मौत हो गई थी। पेरू की सबसे ऊंची चोटी एंडेस से लाखों टन बर्फ़, चट्टानें, कीचड़ और मलबा तेज़ी से नीचे की तरफ़ आया और घाटी में बसी आबादी को पूरी तरह से दफन कर दिया। भयंकर तूफ़ान के कारण राहतकार्य में भी काफी बाधा हुई। पेरू में रेड क्रॉस के प्रमुख के अनुमान के अनुसार दुर्घटना में दो से ढाई हज़ार लोगों की मौत हुई थी। हालांकि स्थानीय प्रशासन के मुताबिक़ मरने वालों की तादाद तीन से चार हज़ार थी। कुछ जगहों पर ये संख्या चार हज़ार के आसपास बताई गई लेकिन सही संख्या कभी सामने नहीं आ पाई।
1966 में देश के दूसरे प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री का निधन हुआ था। दरअसल भारत-पाकिस्तान के बीच 1965 का युद्ध ख़त्म होने के बाद 10 जनवरी 1966 को शास्त्रीजी ने पाकिस्तानी सैन्य शासक जनरल अयूब ख़ान के साथ तत्कालीन सोवियत रूस के ताशकंद शहर में ऐतिहासिक शांति समझौता किया था। हैरानी वाली बात यह रही कि उसी रात शास्त्रीजी का कथित तौर पर दिल का दौरा पड़ने से निधन हो गया। जवाहरलाल नेहरू का अचानक निधन हो जाने के बाद साफ सुथरी छवि के कारण शास्त्रीजी को 1964 में देश का प्रधानमन्त्री बनाया गया। उन्होंने 9 जून 1964 को भारत के दूसरे प्रधानमंत्री का पद भार ग्रहण किया था।

1863 में संन्यासी के रूप में भारतीय संस्कृति की सुगन्ध विदेशों में बिखरने वाले साहित्य, दर्शन और इतिहास के विद्वान स्वामी विवेकानन्द का जन्म हुआ था। रामकृष्ण परमहंस के शिष्य बनने से पहले विवेकानन्द कुश्ती, मुक्केबाज़ी, घुड़सवारी और तैरने आदि में भी निपुणता हासिल कर चुके थे। शुरुआत में वह ब्रह्मसमाज की शिक्षाओं से प्रभावित हुए, लेकिन वैज्ञानिक अध्ययनों के कारण ईश्वर से उनका विश्वास खत्म हो गया था l इसके बाद वह नास्तिक बने रहे और कोलकाता शहर में ऐसे गुरु की खोज में घूमते रहे जो उन्हें ईश्वर के अस्तित्व का ज्ञान करा सके l जब विवेकानंद परमहंस से मिले तो उनकी आयु केवल 25 वर्ष की थी l परमहंस से उनका मिलना मानो दो विभिन्न व्यक्तियों का मिलन प्राचीन और नवीन विचारधारा का मिलन थाl परमहंस की आध्यात्मिक विचारधारा ने विवेकानंद को विशेष रूप से प्रभावित किया। 1899 में उन्होंने अपने गुरु के नाम पर रामकृष्ण सेवाधर्म की स्थापना की l इन मठों में उन्होंने संन्यासियों को मिशन के कार्यों के लिए प्रशिक्षित किया। ज्ञानयोग, राजयोग, भक्तियोग और कर्मयोग विवेकानंद की प्रमुख रचनाये हैं। भारत में स्वामी विवेकानन्द के जन्म दिवस को राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

1926 में भारत के प्रसिद्ध फ़िल्म निर्माता और निर्देशक शक्ति सामंत का पश्चिम बंगाल के बर्धमान में जन्म हुआ था। शुरुआती दौर से ही शक्ति सामंत अभिनेता बनना चाहते थे और इसी सपने को लेकर वह मुंबई आए, लेकिन उन्हें तुरंत सफलता नहीं मिल पाई। उन्होंने शिक्षक की नौकरी करनी शुरु कर दी, लेकिन उनकी किस्मत एक बार फिर उन्हें फिल्मजगत में खींच लाई। 1948 में उन्होंने सहायक निर्देशक के तौर पर बॉलीवुड में कदम रखा । उनके निर्देशन में बनी पहली फ़िल्म बहू 1954 में रिलीज़ हुई और सुपरहिट रही। जिसके बाद 1957 में उन्होंने शक्ति फ़िल्म्स के नाम से प्रोडक्शन हाउस खोला और हावड़ा ब्रिज के नाम से पहली फ़िल्म बनाई। फिल्म हावड़ा ब्रिज में शक्ति सामंत के निर्देशन को लोगों ने खूब सराहा और रातों रात वह बुलंदियों के शिखर पर जा पहुंचे। शक्ति सामंत ने 43 फीचर फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन किया जिनमें चाइना टाउन, कश्मीर की कली और एन इवनिंग इन पेरिस जैसी फ़िल्में शामिल थी। उन्हें फिल्म आराधना,अनुराग और अमानुष की अपार सफलता के बाद फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कारों से सम्मानित किया गया। वह पाँच वर्षों तक फ़िल्म निर्माताओं के संघ के अध्यक्ष भी रहे।

1948 में भारत के प्रसिद्ध नाटककार और रंगमंच निर्देशक रतन थियम का जन्म हुआ था। रतन थियम पारम्परिक संस्कृत नाटकों को उनकी आधुनिक व्याख्या के साथ प्रस्तुत करने के लिए जाने जाते हैं। उन्होंने नेशनल स्कूल ऑफ ड्रामा के साथ कई नाटकों का निर्देशन भी किया। उनका रंगकर्म अद्भुत रंग-संयोजन के कारण अनूठा कहा जाता है। उन्होंने अनेक भारतीय और विदेशी नाटकों का मंचन करने के साथ-साथ भास के दो नाटकों, कर्णभारम् और उरूभंगम् का मंचन किया है।

1666 में मुगल शासक शाहजहां का आगरा में निधन हुआ था। शाहजहां अपनी न्यायप्रियता और वैभवविलास की वजह से अपने काल में बड़े लोकप्रिय रहे। इतिहास में उनका नाम अपनी बेग़म मुमताज़ महल के लिये विश्व की सबसे ख़ूबसूरत इमारत ताज महल बनाने के लिए दर्ज है। मुगल बादशाह जहांगीर की मौत के बाद छोटी उम्र में ही उन्हें मुगल सिंहासन के उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में चुन लिया गया था। उनके शासनकाल को मुग़ल शासन का स्वर्ण युग और भारतीय सभ्यता का सबसे समृद्ध काल बताया जाता है।
1981 में रोनाल्ड रीगन ने अमेरिका के 40वें राष्ट्रपति के रूप में पदभार संभाला था। अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के इतिहास में रोनाल्ड रीगन एकमात्र ऐसे राष्ट्रपति हुए हैं, जिन्हें अपने प्रतिद्वंद्वी के मुकाबले सर्वाधिक पोपुलर वोट और सर्वाधिक इलैक्टोरल वोट मिले थे और आज तक कोई भी अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति इस रिकार्ड को नहीं तोड़ पाया है। पूर्व उप राष्ट्रपति वाल्टर मोन्डाले रोनाल्ड रीगन के मुकाबले में मैदान में थे और रीगन ने 69 साल की उम्र में राष्ट्रपति पद का चुनाव लड़ा था और बढ़ती उम्र को लेकर वह आलोचनाओं के शिकार भी हुए थे। लेकिन इसके बावजूद रोनाल्ड रीगन ने नया इतिहास रचते हुए सर्वाधिक 54, 455 , 075 पोपुलर वोट और सर्वाधिक 525 इलैक्टोरल वोट हासिल किए ।

1897 में महान स्वतंत्रता सेनानी सुभाषचंद्र बोस का जन्म हुआ था। बोस को नेताजी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। नेताजी भारत के स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम के अग्रणी नेता थे। द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध के दौरान, अंग्रेज़ों के खिलाफ लड़ने के लिये, उन्होंने जापान के सहयोग से आज़ाद हिन्द फौज का गठन किया था। उनके द्वारा दिया गया जय हिन्द का नारा भारत का राष्ट्रीय नारा बन गया। 'तुम मुझे खून दो मैं तुम्हे आजादी दूंगा' का नारा भी अत्यधिक प्रचलन में आया। नेताजी की मृत्यु को लेकर आज भी विवाद है। जहां जापान में प्रतिवर्ष 18 अगस्त को उनका जन्म दिन धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है वहीं भारत में रहने वाले उनके परिवार के लोगों का आज भी यह मानना है कि सुभाष की मौत 1945 में नहीं हुई।
1977 में जनता पार्टी का गठन हुआ था। जनता पार्टी का गठन भारत की प्रथम महिला प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी द्वारा लागू आपातकाल के बाद जनसंघ सहित भारत के प्रमुख राजनैतिक दलों का विलय करके हुआ था। कई विचारधाराओं और छोटे-बड़े दलों को जोड़कर बनी यह पहली पार्टी थी जिसका आधार था, आपातकाल का विरोध करना और विचारधारा की सीमाओं से ऊपर उठकर एक साथ इकट्ठा होना। मोरारजी देसाई जनता पार्टी के नेता चुने गए। मोरारजी देसाई को नेता बनाने का फैसला काफ़ी दबाव के बीच हुआ था। जनता पार्टी ने 1977 से 1980 तक भारत सरकार का नेतृत्व किया। आंतरिक मतभेदों के कारण जनता पार्टी 1980 में टूट गई।

1866 में टोक्यो, जापान युद्ध अपराध न्यायाधिकरण में शामिल भारतीय न्यायाधीश राधाबिनोद पाल का जन्म हुआ था। राधाबिनोद ने बाकी न्यायाधीशों के साथ यह दावा करते हुए असहमति जताई कि जापान के युद्ध के वक्त के नेता दोषी नहीं थे। राधाबिनोद ने कोलकाता के प्रेसिडेन्सी कॉलेज और कोलकाता विश्वविद्यालय से क़ानून की शिक्षा ली और इसी विश्वविद्यालय में 1923 से 1936 तक अध्यापक रहे। 1941 में उन्हें कोलकाता उच्च न्यायालय में न्यायाधीश नियुक्त किया गया। जब उन्होंने द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध के बाद जापान के विरुद्ध ‘टोक्यो ट्रायल्स’ नामक मुकदमा शुरू किया तब उन्हें इसमें न्यायाधीश बनाया गया। भारत और जापान के संबंधों में पाल के योगदान को आज भी याद किया जाता है। युद्ध अपराधों के मुकदमे के बाद, उनको संयुक्त राष्ट्र अंतरराष्ट्रीय विधि आयोग में चुना गया, जहां उन्होंने 1952 से 1966 तक सेवा की।

1780 में भारत का पहला अंग्रेजी अखबार बंगाल गजट पहली बार प्रकाशित हुआ था। बंगाल गजट को एक अंग्रेज जेम्स अगस्ट्न हिकी ने कोलकाता से अंग्रेजी भाषा में निकाला था। बंगाल गजट को हिकीज गजट भी कहा जाता है। यह चार पृष्ठों का अखबार हुआ करता था और सप्ताह में एक बार प्रकाशित होता था। हिकी भारत के पहले पत्रकार थे, जिन्होंने प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता के लिये ब्रिटिश सरकार से संघर्ष किया। हिकी ने बिना डरे अखबार के जरिए भ्रष्टाचार और ब्रिटिश शासन की आलोचना की, जिसकी वजह से उन्हें भारत छोड़ने के फरमान के तौर पर अंजाम भुगतना पड़ा। ब्रिटिश शासन की आलोचना करने के कारण बंगाल गजट को जब्त कर लिया गया था और 23 मार्च 1782 को अखबार का प्रकाशन बंद कर दिया गया।
1970 में भारत के प्रसिद्ध निशानेबाज़ और एथेंस ओलम्पिक-2004 के रजत पदक विजेता राज्यवर्धन सिंह राठौड़ का जन्म हुआ था। वह पहले ऐसे भारतीय हैं जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता के बाद एकल रजत पदक जीता है। उनसे पहले ब्रितानी मूल के भारत में जन्मे नॉर्मन प्रिचर्ड ने 1900 के ओलम्पिक में दो रजत पदक जीते थे। 1990 में जब वे भारतीय सेना में मेजर खे, तब उन्हें “ भारतीय सैन्य अकैडमी” से “सोर्ड ऑफ़ ऑनर” के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। इसके बाद राज्यवर्धन सिंह राठौड़ ने निशानेबाजी में अपना कैरियर बनाया। 2002 में मेनचेस्टर में हुए कॉमनवेल्थ गेम्स में हिस्सा लिया और एकल डबल ट्रैप स्पर्धा में स्वर्ण पदक जीता। इसके बाद निशानेबाजी में उनका पदक जीतने का सिलसिला जारी हो गया। आखिरकार 2004 के एथेंस ओलंपिक की डबल ट्रैप निशानेबाजी प्रतियोगिता में उनका निशाना सिल्वर मैडल पर लगा।
