On August 18th of this year, the 62nd edition of Miss World was held in Dongsheng Fitness Center Stadium, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China. The winner…drum roll please…is Miss China’s Yu Wenxia! This happens to be the second time in the history of the Miss World pageant that Miss China has won the title of Miss World, the first being in 2007 when Zhang Zilin won the honor. Miss China overcame more than 100 contestants at a glittering ceremony on the edge of the Gobi desert in a Chinese mining city.
This pageant stands out from others as it made a couple of firsts in its’ 62-year existence. For one thing, this was the first time that the Inner Mongolian city of Ordos has ever hosted the international beauty pageant. Though it is too early to be definitive, most likely this will not be the last time the pageant takes place here. Another first was the actual total of participants in the contest which was 116. These contestants came from all over the world to compete and made this year the biggest turnout in the pageants history.
The new Miss World is a 23-year-old music student who aspires to one day become a music teacher. Last year’s Miss World, Ivian Sarcos from Venezuela, crowned her successor at the conclusion of the contest. The 1st runner up was Sophie Moulds from Wales and the 2nd runner up was Jessica Kahawaty from Australia.
