അഭയം തേടി അനധികൃതമായി അതിര്‍ത്തികടന്ന് അമേരിക്കയിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചതിന് 2400 ഓളം ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ജയില്‍ ശിക്ഷ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്. ഇവരില്‍ കൂടുതലും പഞ്ചാബില്‍നിന്നുള്ളവരാണ്. അമേരിക്കയിലെ 86 ജയിലുകളിലായി ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ 2382 ഇന്ത്യക്കാരാണ് ശിക്ഷ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് നോര്‍ത്ത് അമേരിക്കന്‍ പഞ്ചാബി അസോസിയേഷന്‍(എന്‍ എ പി എ) വ്യക്തമാക്കി. മാതൃരാജ്യത്ത് അക്രമവും വേട്ടയാടലും നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് അഭയം തേടുന്നതിനുള്ള കാരണങ്ങളായി ഇവരില്‍ അധികം പേരും ഉന്നയിച്ചത്. ഒക്ടോബര്‍ പത്താം തിയതി വരെയുള്ള കണക്കുകള്‍ പ്രകാരം കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയയിലെ അഡെലാന്റോ ഇമിഗ്രേഷന്‍ ആന്‍ഡ് കസ്റ്റംസ് എന്‍ഫോഴ്‌സ്‌മെന്റ് പ്രൊസസിങ് സെന്ററില്‍നിന്ന് 377 ഇന്ത്യക്കാരെയാണ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഇംപീരിയല്‍ റീജിയണല്‍ അഡള്‍ട്ട് ഡിറ്റന്‍ഷന്‍ ഫെസിലിറ്റിയില്‍നിന്ന് 269 പേരെയും വിക്ടര്‍വില്ലെയിലെ ഫെഡറല്‍ കറക്ഷണല്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റിയൂഷനില്‍നിന്ന് 245 പേരെയും വാഷിങ്ടണ്‍ സ്‌റ്റേറ്റിലെ ടകോമ ഐ സി ഇ പ്രോസസിങ് സെന്ററില്‍നിന്ന് 115 പേരെയും അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തതായി കണക്കുകള്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.
