New Delhi: On the sixth day of the biggest sporting event, Google has yet come up with another doodle to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics Hockey.



The doodle features a woman hockey player dribbling the hockey ball in a green turf with the Google logo on the background.

Yesterday, Google celebrated London 2012 artistic gymnastics men's rings with the doodle depicting a male gymnast displaying his craft on rings.
On Monday, Google honoured London 2012 Fencing with the doodle showing two fencers - one in attack mode and the other player in defense mode - with the letter ‘L’ from the Google’s logo shown as one of the bladed weapons being used by the latter.

On Sunday, the doodle was dedicated for the London 2012 diving which showed a female diver taking position to take a back-flip into the pool with Google’s logo forming inside the pool.

On Saturday, Google doodle represented the London 2012 archery. The doodle depicted a girl archer aiming on a green field, reminiscent of the historic Lord’s cricket ground where the archery events of the Summer Games are being held.

The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics on July 27 was celebrated with the doodle depicting five athletes playing different Olympics sports. .

Google had earlier posted three ice hockey doodles during the Winter Olympic Games - the first was during the Salt Lake City Olympics 2002, the second during the 2006 Torino Olympic Games and the third Ice Hockey doodle was put up during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.
    The hockey events at London 2012 Olympics are scheduled from 29 July to 11 August.
    There are two hockey events - one men's and one women's competition. The number of participants in Hockey events are 192 men and 192 women, i.e., twelve men's and 12 women's teams, with 16 athletes (11 players and five substitutes) on each team. Each country is limited to one men's and on

    The London Olympics 2012, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiadis, kicked off on 27 July, 2012 and will conclude on August 12, 2012.

    Interesting Facts about Hockey and the Olympics

    Men’s Hockey made its debut at the London 1908 Games.
    The first women’s Olympic Hockey competition was held at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.
    The hockey pitches are 91.4m long and 55m wide.
    Each goal is surrounded by a D-shaped shooting circle. The penalty spot at either end is 6.4m from the goal.
    The goals at each end are 3.66m wide and 2.14m high.
    Until the 1970s, hockey was always played on grass. However, top-level matches, including those at London 2012, now take place on water-based synthetic-turf pitches, which allow the ball to roll more smoothly and quickly.
    For the first time ever at the Olympic Games, the London 2012 hockey pitch is blue, rather than green.

    Hockey was dominated in the early 20th century by India. The team made a fighting start to their campaign in the Olympics 2012 as well. They however could not stop the Dutch from a 3-2 win despite coming back strongly in the second half, on Monday.

    The Indians now play New Zealand on Wednesday.

    Interestingly, the Google Doodle features a woman player. Women too have been a significant part of hockey through the years. Google however has featured the sport for the first time despite having showcased ice hockey thrice during Winter Olympic Games.
