ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ബെഡ്ഫഡ്‌ഷെയറിലാണ് എയര്‍ലാന്‍ഡര്‍ തകര്‍ന്ന് വീണത്. 'ഫ്‌ളയിംഗ് ബം' എന്നും എയര്‍ലാന്‍ഡര്‍ 10 ന് പേരുണ്ട്. ഭൂമിയുമായി ആകാശക്കപ്പലിനെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ച് നിര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്ന ബന്ധനം വേര്‍പ്പെട്ടതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ബെഡ്ഫഡ്‌ഷെയറിലെ പാടത്തിലേക്ക് എയര്‍ലാന്‍ഡര്‍ ഇടിച്ചിറങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നു. അപകടത്തില്‍ ഒരു ജീവനക്കാരിക്ക് പരുക്കേറ്റതായി നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കളായ ഹൈബ്രിഡ് എയര്‍ വെഹിക്കിള്‍സ് അറിയിച്ചു. അപകടത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് തകര്‍ന്ന എയര്‍ലാന്‍ഡറില്‍ നിന്നും ഇന്ധനവും, ഹീലിയം വാതകവും അഗ്നിശമന സേനാംഗങ്ങള്‍ സുരക്ഷിതമായി നീക്കം ചെയ്തു. ഇതാദ്യമായല്ല എയര്‍ ലാന്‍ഡര്‍ അപകടത്തില്‍ പെടുന്നത്.

ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സാങ്കേതിക സൗകര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം ആദ്യം ലഭ്യമാകുന്നത് പ്രതിരോധ മേഖലയ്ക്കാണെന്നു നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം.അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച വാഹനങ്ങളുടെ ശേഖരവും വിവിധ രാജ്യങ്ങളുടെ പ്രതിരോധ സേനകൾക്കു തന്നെയാകും. യുഎസ്എസ് ജെറാള്‍ഡ് എന്ന, ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ വിമാനവാഹിനി കപ്പല്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ നാവിക സേനയുടെ കയ്യിലാണ്. 2017 ജൂലൈ 22 ന് കമ്മിഷന്‍ ചെയ്ത കപ്പല്‍ നിലവിലെ കണക്കുകളനുസരിച്ച് ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വേഗമേറിയ കപ്പലുകളിലൊന്നാണ്.
75 വിമാനങ്ങളെ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന വിശാലമായ ഡക്കുള്ള കപ്പലിന്റെ നിർമാതാക്കൾ ന്യൂപോര്‍ട്ട് ഷിപ്പ് ബില്‍ഡിങ് കമ്പനിയാണ്. 2009 ല്‍ ആരംഭിച്ച നിർമാണം പൂര്‍ത്തിയായത് 2013 ലാണ്. നാവികസേന ആവശ്യമായ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുത്തി കമ്മിഷന്‍ ചെയ്യാന്‍ നാലു വര്‍ഷം കൂടിയെടുത്തു. ഇതുവരെ ദൂരയാത്രകളൊന്നും നടത്തിയിട്ടില്ലാത്ത യുഎസ്എസ് ജെറാള്‍ഡ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ വിര്‍ജീനിയയിലെ നോര്‍ഫോക്ക് തുറമുഖത്ത് വിശ്രമത്തിലാണ്.
അമേരിക്കയുടെ 38-ാം പ്രസിഡന്‍റ് ജെറാള്‍ഡ് ഫോര്‍ഡിന്‍റെ പേരാണ് ഈ കപ്പലിന്.
രണ്ടാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധ സമയത്ത് നേവിയില്‍ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചതിന്‍റെ ബഹുമാനാര്‍ത്ഥമാണ് ജെറാള്‍ഡിന്‍റെ പേര് ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ യുദ്ധക്കപ്പലിനു നല്‍കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചതും.256 അടി വീതിയും 1092 അടി നീളവുമാണ് യു.എസ്.എസ് ജെറാള്‍ഡിന്‍റെ ഡോക്കിനുള്ളത്. ഒരേ സമയം നാലു വിമാനങ്ങള്‍ക്കു പറന്നുയരാനുള്ള സൗകര്യം ഈ ഡോക്കിലുണ്ട്. കപ്പലിനെതിരായ ആക്രമങ്ങളെ ചെറുക്കാനുള്ള റഡാറുള്‍പ്പടെയുള്ള സംവിധാനങ്ങളും ഡോക്കില്‍ കാണാം.177 അടി ഉയരമാണ് കപ്പലിനുള്ളത്. ഡോക്കിന് താഴെ കപ്പലിന്റെ ഉള്ളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും മുകളിലായുള്ളത് വിമാനങ്ങളുടെ ഹാങ്ങര്‍ ബേ ആണ്. ഒരു ഫുട്ബോള്‍ ഗ്രൗണ്ടിന്‍റെ നീളമുണ്ട് ഈ ഹാങ്ങര്‍ബേയ്ക്ക് കപ്പലിന്റെ പരമാവധി ശേഷിയായ 75 വിമാനങ്ങളെയും ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാന്‍ കഴിയും.
ഹാങ്ങര്‍ ബേയുടെ മധ്യത്തിൽ മൂന്നു വെപ്പണ്‍ ഇലവേറ്ററുകളുണ്ട്.
യുദ്ധസമയത്ത് വിമാനങ്ങളില്‍ നിറയ്ക്കാനുള്ള ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ എത്തിക്കാനാണ് ഇവ. വിമാനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് റോക്കറ്റുകളും വെടിയുണ്ടകളും മറ്റും നേരിട്ടു നിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ ഈ ഇലവേറ്ററുകളില്‍ സംവിധാനമുണ്ട്. സെക്കൻഡുകള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ ഒരു വിമാനത്തിനാവശ്യമായ സാമഗ്രി
