The quake hit about 50 miles west of Eureka and occurred at 10:18 a.m. PDT, 4.3 miles beneath the seabed, according to the USGS.
It was followed by about a half-dozen aftershocks, including one of magnitude-4.6.
There is not believed to be any threat of a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

'This lasted longer than any earthquake I've ever felt,' Raquel Maytorena, 52, who lives about a mile from the coast in Ferndale near Eureka, told The Los Angeles Times. 'It just kept going and going, very slowly and softly. It was not violent. It almost felt like you were in a boat that was rocking.'

The quake was occurred around 8:47 p.m., and its epicenter was 27 miles southwest of Susanville and seven miles west northwest of Greenville, about 150 miles northeast of Sacramento, and zero feet deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake about 50 miles west of Eureka on Sunday night was initially reported as a magnitude-6.9. It was felt widely across the region and across the Oregon border, but there were no reports of injuries or damage.
The quake had produced 20 aftershocks of magnitude-3.5 or larger by late Monday morning, and more were expected over the coming days.
'This has been the strongest quake off of the northern California coast since 1992,' said Weather Underground weather historian Christopher Burt.
The last stronger earthquake reported off the north shore of California was on April 25, 1992 when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the Mendocino Coast, Burt said.
The quake was felt widely across the region but both fire and sheriff's officials in Humboldt County, which includes most of the populated areas near the epicenter, said early Monday more than four hours after the quake hit that they had no reports of any damage or injuries.
The National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami danger for the region.
But more than 3,000 people reported on the USGS website that they felt the quake. Some reported a long, rolling shake that woke children or knocked items off shelves. Some of those respondents live across the border in Oregon.
