There are evolving tactical behavior from digital threat actors as they opt for different types of malicious attacks compared to years past. The IoT #malware (37%) and encrypted threats (22%) also is on the rise, the SonicWall Mid-Year #CyberThreat Report uncovers.
#Cybercriminals are diversifying and expanding their skill sets to attack critical infrastructure, making the threat landscape even more complex and forcing organizations to reconsider their security needs. Despite the decline in global ransomware attempts (-41%), a variety of other attacks have trended up globally, including crypto-jacking (+399%), IoT malware (+37%) and encrypted threats (+22%).
Overall intrusion attempts were up, led by the highest year on record for global crypto-jacking volume recorded by SonicWall, as threat actors shifted away from traditional ransomware attacks in favor of a stealthier means of malicious activities. The data suggests increased law enforcement activity, heavy sanctions and victims’ refusal to pay ransom demands have altered criminal conduct, and threat actors are targeting other means of revenue.

While the volume of attacks has only risen marginally, we have witnessed several sophisticated campaigns from #cybercriminals who are finding ways to weaponize legitimate tools for malicious gains.
Recent examples include using #ChatGPT for code generation that can help less-skilled threat actors effortlessly launch cyberattacks, Trojanizing 3CXDesktop app for a supply chain attack, and leveraging the critical unauthorized RCE Vulnerability in the “Microsoft Message Queuing” service (commonly known as MSMQ).
The CheckPoint Research team also discovered the fastest ever encrypting ransomware ever seen, all of which demonstrates how attackers are continuing their rampant crimes and never looking back.

Increased digitization in healthcare is a contributor to the industry’s enlarged attack surface. And it is accelerated by a number of factors: the broad adoption of Electronic Health Records Systems (EHRS), integration of IoT technology in medical devices (software-based medical equipment like MRIs, EKGs, infusion pumps), and a migration to cloud services. A hospital room is equipped with an average of 15-20 devices connected to the internet in today's world of healthcare. The proliferation of medical and internet-connected devices in healthcare brings both clinical benefits and security risks. Indeed, the increasing use of medical IoT devices makes healthcare organizations more vulnerable to DDoS attacks; attackers use infected IoT devices in botnets to launch coordinated attacks. Since healthcare IT systems contain sensitive patient data, the sector has long been a target for hackers. Cybercriminals are drawn to healthcare networks because of widespread flaws that offer lucrative opportunities, which is why attacks are on the rise. Ransomware-as-a-service has become the norm in the cybercrime community in the healthcare industry this year.
“Globally, ransomware attacks have been one of the biggest threats to cybersecurity, particularly in the healthcare sector. As per Sophos’ The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2021 report - 34% of healthcare organizations were hit by ransomware in the last year. Hospitals and health systems are, quite unfortunately, ripe for ransomware and other cyberattacks. Some of the factors most responsible for the rise in healthcare-targeted cyberattacks are due to the nature of the industry itself, like decentralized operations across hospitals and healthcare providers, and exponentially growing volumes of patient health information being captured and stored electronically (i.e. electronic health records) by health systems. Healthcare providers need to invest in technologies like EDR with human-led threat hunting, deploying

#Ransomware attacks are a type of #cybercrime where hackers encrypt an individual or organization's data and demand payment, usually in cryptocurrency, in exchange for the decryption key.
Ransomware attacks have become more common and sophisticated in recent years. As technology advances and more devices become connected to the internet, the potential attack surface for cybercriminals also increases. This could lead to a higher number of successful ransomware attacks, further driving up the damage costs.
Disaster recovery and data protection will play a crucial role in 2023. With ransomware attacks constantly garnering headlines, organizations should get used to the fact that it is impossible to prevent ransomware attacks entirely. Moreover, with the rise of Ransomware as a Service (RaaS) over the past couple of years, global ransomware damage costs are predicted to exceed $265 billion by 2031.

Humans are the weakest link among many attacks
#Ransomware is now one of the most potentially damaging — and prevalent — types of malware. With this lucrative crime, hackers break into a firm’s computer system, encrypting the data, which they will only release for a fee. A Sophos report revealed that the majority (83%) of IT teams in India said the number of phishing emails targeting their employees increased during 2020. Even government agencies are not spared. In February 2021, a number of senior Indian government officials, including those from the ministries of defence and external affairs, were targeted in a phishing campaign. According to the government officials, the attackers were using compromised government domain email accounts to launch their hacking attempts. Back in July 2020, a major Indian snacks manufacturer, Haldiram, faced a ransomware attack on its servers by hackers who allegedly encrypted all its files, data, applications and systems and demanded a ransom of 7 hundred thousand USD for giving access to the stolen data. Cybercriminals have now resorted to stealing information during an attack and threaten to publish this information on leak sites on the dark web or sell it, increasing the pressure for victims to pay the ransom.
In February 2021, India’s national airline, Air India, reported a cyberattack on their SITA passenger service systems containing personal identity information, passport data, ticket information, frequent flyer data and credit card information of about 4.5 million customers around the world. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that ransomware damage costs will exceed $265 billion by 2031, with attacks on businesses, consumers, or devices occurring every two seconds. Whether the prediction is right or wrong, the message stays the same. Businesses need to plan, implement effective data protection and ransomware prevention solutions, and back up their data. Whil

Ransomware payments hit new records in 2021 as cybercriminals increasingly turned to Dark Web “leak sites” where they pressured victims to pay up by threatening to release sensitive data, according to research released from Unit 42 by Palo Alto Networks. The average ransom demand in cases worked by Unit 42 incident responders rose 144% in 2021 to $2.2 million, while the average payment climbed 78% to $541,010, according to the 2022 Unit 42 Ransomware Threat Report. The most affected industries were Professional and Legal Services, Construction, Wholesale and Retail, Healthcare, and Manufacturing. In 2021, ransomware attacks interfered with everyday activities that people all over the world take for granted – everything from buying groceries, purchasing gasoline for cars to calling emergency numbers in the event of an emergency and obtaining medical care. The Conti ransomware group was responsible for the most activity, accounting for more than 1 in 5 of cases worked by Unit 42 consultants in 2021. REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, was No. 2 at 7.1%, followed by Hello Kitty and Phobos (4.8% each). Conti also posted the names of 511 organizations on its Dark Web leak site, the most of any group.
The report describes how the cyber extortion ecosystem grew in 2021, with the emergence of 35 new ransomware gangs. It documents how criminal enterprises invested windfall profits into creating easy-to-use tools in attacks that increasingly leverage zero-day vulnerabilities. The number of victims whose data was posted on leak sites rose 85% in 2021, to 2,566 organizations, according to Unit 42’s analysis. 60% of leak site victims were in the Americas, followed by 31% for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and then 9% in the Asia-Pacific region. Cyberattacks become more attractive and potentially more disastrous as dependence on information technology increases,” said SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner. “Securing information in a boundless world is a near impossi
