Amid the continued “weaponisation” of the internet by some Big Tech platforms during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is bringing back the focus on the sweeping powers of social media platforms. India is readying a new cybersecurity and data governance framework. These actions by Big Tech companies put into perspective and call for a renewed focus on an “Atmanirbhar internet” call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which laid focus on reducing dependency on services being provided by these global firms. There are some Russian banks and their subsidiaries being banned from the international SWIFT network, it was due to the focus of the government’s self-build initiatives that the country now had alternatives to these global arrangements if India ever found itself in a similar position. If we were depending on SWIFT alone, we are gone. But we have UPI, fintech platforms in India that have reduced our reliance on a SWIFT type of an international money transfer platform. We are seeing through our thinking of Atma Nirbhar Bharat that we should not depend on the Indian internet being controlled or influenced by these big tech platforms alone. Such actions by companies, countries and big tech platforms, which have taken “positions that are very partisan”, are resulting in a “splinter-net”. Two phenomena are very visible: one is weaponization of the internet of which we were aware of in some sense. The second is the phenomenon of the splinter-net.
The internet is increasingly being splintered, driven by the power of some Western countries. These platforms have now become dominant and in the event of a conflict between two sovereigns, they are being weaponized and there are no laws that would prevent this.,” Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, companies, countries, Big Tech platforms and intermediaries have announced a slew of sanctions which have e

IoT technology has changed the game for healthcare providers seeking to reduce costs and improve delivery of patient care. The advances are promising, and the medical IoT market is set to explode. At the same time, there is a growing threat to the healthcare sector to come under cyber-attacks, with the implementation of IoT. These are usually connected with medical devices like MRI and X-ray equipment, typically obtained from third-party sources. Since these medical devices aren’t built with security as a priority, they are vulnerable to cyber attacks that try to access their sensitive data. Healthcare institutions are targeted by cyber attackers for many reasons. One is that they safeguard and hold large amounts of sensitive data, including intellectual property such as vaccine research. They also contain identifiable information like medical and insurance details to be sold on the black market. In recent years, India has seen IoT adoption in education, governance, and financial services. The technology has also enabled doctors to see and interact with patients in remote telemedicine centers – with the case history and medical data automatically transmitted to the doctor for analysis.
India has an acute shortage of doctors which impacts both the quality and reach of healthcare services in rural and urban centers. A report says, a digital platform powered by advanced digital technologies can enable continuous remote patient monitoring and reporting, allowing hospitals to extend care to more people, and reduce the burden on healthcare infrastructure. However, most of these IoT devices are hackable, and introduce cybersecurity risks that could negatively impact patient care and the bottom line. Hence, the need for operational technology (OT) security is changing as more and more of these environments are being connected to enterprise networks and exposed to threats on the internet. While this online connection makes data gathering and remote management of the

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is all about weaponization of AI which will be the biggest danger. This is a serious danger because AI-powered weapons could be more precise, deadly, and difficult to control than traditional weapons.
We are witnessing how people are losing their jobs to an intelligent machine? We can’t deny the fact that, AI can affect the results of an election. In coming days, we are going to witness the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI.
The idea that technology can be used to spread lies and untruths is not new. People have been doing it with books and leaflets for centuries. It became much easier with the advent of word processors, laser printers, email, and social networks. With this there is sharp increase in the cyber risks. The younger population was particularly vulnerable to the spread of extremist ideologies via social media sites.

There are evolving tactical behavior from digital threat actors as they opt for different types of malicious attacks compared to years past. The IoT #malware (37%) and encrypted threats (22%) also is on the rise, the SonicWall Mid-Year #CyberThreat Report uncovers.
#Cybercriminals are diversifying and expanding their skill sets to attack critical infrastructure, making the threat landscape even more complex and forcing organizations to reconsider their security needs. Despite the decline in global ransomware attempts (-41%), a variety of other attacks have trended up globally, including crypto-jacking (+399%), IoT malware (+37%) and encrypted threats (+22%).
Overall intrusion attempts were up, led by the highest year on record for global crypto-jacking volume recorded by SonicWall, as threat actors shifted away from traditional ransomware attacks in favor of a stealthier means of malicious activities. The data suggests increased law enforcement activity, heavy sanctions and victims’ refusal to pay ransom demands have altered criminal conduct, and threat actors are targeting other means of revenue.

In today’s world, it is inevitable that with our data being stored and shared across several businesses we deal with, any breach into any of these infrastructures will likely result in our confidential information getting exposed. Any company can fall victim to cybercrime. We are hearing the incidents of cyberattacks come from government organizations, educational and healthcare institutions, banks, law firms, nonprofits, and many other organizations. Smart business houses are investing more into cybersecurity to eliminate risks and keep their sensitive data safe, and this has already brought the first results. Businesses need to focus on adopting a comprehensive cybersecurity architecture. And, this is where AI and IoT comes under the spotlight. With IoT, security challenges will remain an issue through the entire product lifecycle, long after products have been sold. Experts say that every company needs to be well prepared for the challenges ahead.
A sound governance framework with strong leadership is essential to effective enterprise-wide cybersecurity. There is a compelling business case for using AI in cybersecurity as industries worldwide begin to investigate how this technology will help them improve their operations. Cybersecurity seeks to leverage AI and ML to improve the speed at which they detect cyber threats and mitigate risks. A well-trained staff can serve as the first line of defence against cyber-attacks. There are key Benefits of AI-enabled Cybersecurity, AI reduces that time to a great extent and enables them to spend more quality time in analyzing incidents, understanding the patterns/ trends that the algorithms identify.

Increasing social engineering attacks - Smishing, vishing, and phishing | VARINDIA News Hour
We live in a world that’s becoming more digitally dependent. Right from our social interactions to professional interchanges and financial transactions, most take place digitally. Smishing and vishing are two types of fraud that use SMS (smishing) and voice (vishing) to trick people into giving up money or personal information. They’re “social engineering attacks,” meaning that in a smishing or vishing attack, the attacker uses impersonation to exploit the target’s trust. Because 96% of phishing attacks arrive via email, the term “phishing” is sometimes used to refer exclusively to email-based attacks. A recent survey revealed some alarming numbers about Indian companies managing personal identifiable data and electronic health records. While digital resources are enabling, they also leave us vulnerable to cyber criminals as a lot of information regarding our personal and professional lives rests in the digital domain. Cyber insurance or cyber security insurance provides coverage from activities such as identity theft, unauthorized transactions, and more. Buying a cyber insurance policy can safeguard against online frauds. The policy can be bought by anyone who is 18 years and above and can be bought for family members. Nearly 58% of Indian companies have not opted for cyber insurance yet, indicating lack of awareness about cyber-attacks and cyber risk management strategies. The survey by RIMS and JB Boda Group says, as more attacks on utilities and industrial systems emerge, with Ransomware involved, it no longer is an IT related issue, but of the CFO and board.
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered digital transformation across companies, leading to the creation of a complex IT landscape in the form of public clouds, unfamiliar home networks, external systems connected through APIs, along with a plethora of access points into their sphere of monitoring and
