A father had to carry the dead body of his daughter on a stretcher after hospital authorities in Odisha failed to provide an ambulance.
Alibha Pradhan from Benangpaju village had drowned while taking bath and was brought to the hospital. Doctors declared the girl “brought dead”, after which her relatives asked them to provide a hearse to take away the body. After waiting for two and a half hours, there was no response from the authorities.
The family were stopped by the Phulbani town police who arranged a Mahaprayana for the family to take away the body. After the Dana Majhi incident in 2016, the Odisha government launched the Mahaprayana scheme which provides hearse services for people.

ओडिशा के दीना मांझी की खबर को अभी कोई भूला भी नहीं था...कि सूबे के मल्कानगिरी से समाज और सिस्टम को शर्मसार करने वाली कुछ और तस्वीरें आई है...जहां छह साल की बच्ची की एंबुलेंस में मौत हो गई तो एंबुलेंस वाले ने शव को घर पहुंचाने से इनकार कर दिया. छह किलोमीटर तक बच्ची के शव को लेकर पिता रोड पर चलता रहा. दरअसल छह साल की बीमार बेटी वर्षा को इलाज के लिए प्राथमिक स्वास्थ्य केंद्र में भर्ती कराया गया था. जहां से कल उसे मलकानगिरी के अस्पताल के लिए रेफर कर दिया गया. एंबुलेंस में बीमार बेटी को लेकर माता पिता रवाना हुए. लेकिन रास्ते में ही बेटी की जान चली गई. जैसे ही इस बारे में एंबुलेंस में मौजूद कर्मचारियों को मालूम हुआ आरोप है कि उसने शव को घर ले जाने से इनकार दिया. रास्ते में कुछ लोग मिले तो उनको मुकुंद ने पूरी बात बताई. फिर जाकर लोगों ने एक निजी गाड़ी का इंतजाम किया और वर्षा के शव को गांव पहुंचाया गया. मीडिया में मामला सामने आने के बाद कलेक्टर ने पूरे मामले की जांच के आदेश दिये हैं. जबकि एंबुलेंस में मौजूद स्वास्थ्य कर्मियों के खिलाफ मुकदमा दर्ज किया गया है.
