Earth Day 2013 is the subject of Monday's Google doodle across the world.

Earth Day was first celebrated in the US in 1970. The idea was the brainchild Gaylord Nelson, then a US Senator from Wisconsin. Nelson conceived the idea after witnessing the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student movement that was going on at the time against the Vietnam war, Nelson dreamt of movement that would make people think about air and water pollution and force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.

Senator Gaylord Nelson announced the idea for a 'national teach-in on the environment' and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. He also got Denis Hayes on board as a national coordinator for the event. Hayes did a lot of the ground work, building a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land.

The first ever Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. An incredible 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment all across the country. Thousands of colleges and universities organised protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife, independently til.

Google Doodles for International Labour Day 2013

Google sure knows the value of labourers and has decided to honour them on the occasion of International Labour Day celebrated in India today. International Labour Day or International Workers’ Day is celebrated on the 1st of May in many nations of the world. Over 80 countries officially celebrate the day by giving employees or labourers a holiday. There are many countries who also celebrate the day unofficially.
The day also known as May Day as it is celebrated on the first of May, has an interesting history to it. In 1886, there began a tussle between the police and some workers in what later came to be known as the Haymarket Affair of Chicago. Workers were protesting for an 8-hour workday when the police began dispersing them. In a fit of anger, one of the protestors threw a bomb at the police and the police retaliated by opening fire. Four demonstrators succumbed to the injuries sustained in the firing. 3 years later, in 1889, recognized May Day as an annual event and called for international demonstrations of the 1886 tragedy. The events were soon followed by May Day riots in 1894 in Ohio where due an abnormal increase in unemployment, the public took to protesting against the government for lack of relief measure.

Workers in many countries strived to introduce the day as a National Holiday. However, there are certain countries which still celebrate International Labour Day on a date different than May 1. In Canada, the first Monday of September is
