Over 80 countries officially celebrate the day by giving employees or labourers a holiday. There are many countries who also celebrate the day unofficially.

Workers were protesting for an 8-hour workday when the police began dispersing them. In a fit of anger, one of the protestors threw a bomb at the police and the police retaliated by opening fire. Four demonstrators succumbed to the injuries sustained in the firing. 3 years later, in 1889, recognized May Day as an annual event and called for international demonstrations of the 1886 tragedy. The events were soon followed by May Day riots in 1894 in Ohio where due an abnormal increase in unemployment, the public took to protesting against the government for lack of relief measure.

Workers in many countries strived to introduce the day as a National Holiday. However, there are certain countries which still celebrate International Labour Day on a date different than May 1. In Canada, the first Monday of September is .

    Google doodles Earth Day 2013

Earth Day 2013 is the subject of Monday's Google doodle across the world.

Earth Day was first celebrated in the US in 1970. The idea was the brainchild Gaylord Nelson, then a US Senator from Wisconsin. Nelson conceived the idea after witnessing the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student movement that was going on at the time against the Vietnam war, Nelson dreamt of movement that would make people think about air and water pollution and force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.

Senator Gaylord Nelson announced the idea for a 'national teach-in on the environment' and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. He also got Denis Hayes on board as a national coordinator for the event. Hayes did a lot of the ground work, building a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land.

The first ever Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. An incredible 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment all across the country. Thousands of colleges and universities organised protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife, independently til

To celebrate International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, Google has honoured workers across the world with a doodle in its homepage.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

First May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on 1 May 1923. This was also the first time the red flag was used in India.

May Day is a nationwide bank and public holiday in India. The holiday is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, it is officially called Maharashtra Day (Maharashtra Din) and Gujarat Day respectively, since on this day in 1960 each attained statehood, after the old Bombay State became divided on linguistic lines.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. The day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups.

Google doodles 200th anniversary of Grimm's Fairy Tales

Google has featured a multi-part doodle on its homepage as a tribute on the 200th anniversary of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Grimm's Fairy Tales is the popular name of a 19th century German book called Children's and Household Tales (Kinder und Hausmärchen in German). The book was written by German brothers Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm.

In Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Grimm brothers collected many of Europe's most popular fairy tales including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog-Price, Goldilocks And The Three Bears, Rapunzel, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Rumpelstiltskin and many, many others.

The first volume of the first edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published in 1812 containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1814. The seventh and final edition under the brothers' watch was published in 1857 and it contained 211 stories split across two volumes.

These editions were extensively illustrated by Philipp Grot Johann, whose work on Grimm's Fairy Tales is considered as amongst the finest of his career. Some of these illustrations are mildly humorous, such as the one in The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs where the devil is pictured reading a newspaper which, on closer examination, is a stock market letter. Robert Leinweber took over illustration duties for the latter editions after Johann's death in 1892.
