Ella Fitzgerald had a troublesome childhood,
her father left the family soon after her birth.
Her mother moved over to new York with her and
in the 1920s, she wanted to become a dancer.
She skipped the school later, lived on the street
and had luck to enter a contest at Harlem's Apollo Theater.
This was the start of her singer career.
In 1938 she made a number-one hit: A-Tisket A-Tasket,
few time later a second. In the 1940s her career boomed.
From 1946 she worked with Norman Granz at the Philharmonic.
Her golden time came in the 1950s and '60s. She had an
amazign voice no one could copy. Later in 1989 her
career ended after massive health problems.
Ella Fitzgerald recorded more than 200 albums
and more than 2000 songs.

Nelson Mandela, better known as 'Madiba' and 'Tata' amongst his South African supporters, was born July 18 1918 as Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela to the Thembu royal family. He died last year on December 5 after suffering from pulmonary infection - he was 95 years old then. Mandela, who was also a boxer in his younger days, first became a part of the ANC (African National Congress) and rose to prominence during the ANC's Defiance Campaign in 1952. He started his law practice in 1949, and was majorly involved in helping set free those members of the ANC convicted by the state.
Mandela was unsuccessfully persecuted by the state up until the time he co-founded the armed wing of the ANC - Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation). He was arrested for a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government in 1962 - then convicted, tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Thorn, Poland on February 19, 1473. He was the son of a wealthy merchant. After his father's death, he was raised by his mother's brother, a bishop in the Catholic Church. Copernicus studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Krakow. Through his uncle's influence Copernicus was appointed a canon (church official) of the Catholic Church. He used the income from the position to help pay for additional studies. Copernicus studied law and medicine at the universities of Bologna, Padua, and Ferrara in Italy. While he was studying at the University of Bologna, his interest in astronomy was stimulated. He lived in the home of a mathematics professor who influenced him to question the astronomy beliefs of the day.
