മനുഷ്യൻ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്രതിസന്ധിയാണ് മാനസിക സമ്മർദ്ദം അഥവാ വിഷാദ രോഗം എന്നാൽ ഇത് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ് ചികിത്സിക്കാവുന്ന രോഗം മാത്രമാണ്. ഭക്ഷണരീതി,ഉറക്കം,വ്യക്തിത്വം എന്നിവയെ കടുത്ത തോതിൽ ബാധിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് വിഷാദം രോഗമായി മാറുന്നത്.

സ്മൃതിനാശവും ധാരണശേഷിപരമായ (cognitive) കഴിവുകള്‍ നഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍.നമ്മുടെ തലച്ചോര്‍ ഞരമ്പ്‌കോശങ്ങളുടെ (Neuron) ഒരു കാടാണ്. അവയില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള തന്തുക്കള്‍, അടുത്ത ന്യൂറോണുകളുമായുള്ള സന്ധികള്‍ അതിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്ന സിഗ്നലുകള്‍ തുടങ്ങി അനുസ്യൂതം പ്രവര്‍ത്തനനിരതമാണ് മസ്തിഷ്‌കം.ഈ കോശങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ അമൈലോയിഡ് (Amyloid beta) എന്ന protein നാരുകള്‍ അടിഞ്ഞു കൂടുന്നതും tau എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രോട്ടീന്‍ കരടുകുരുക്കുകള്‍ നിറയുന്നതും ആണ് അല്‍ഷിമേഴ്‌സില്‍ നാശം വിതയ്ക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന വില്ലന്മാര്‍ എന്നാണ് പഠനങ്ങളില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത്. അല്‍ഷിമേഴ്‌സില്‍ രോഗത്തില്‍ ഇത് വളരെ വ്യാപകമായി കാണുകയും ഓര്‍മകള്‍ രൂപപ്പെടുന്ന ഭാഗങ്ങളെ ആദ്യം ബാധിക്കുകയും മറ്റിടങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പടരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ രാസനാരുകളും കരടുകളും കോശങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയിലെ ആശയവിനിമയത്തെ തടയുകയും കോശങ്ങളുടെ നിലനില്‍പ്പിനെ ബാധിച്ചു അവയുടെ ആയുസ്സ് കുറക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നാണ് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഞരമ്പുകോശങ്ങളുടെ മൃതിയും നാശവും ആണ് സ്മൃതിനാശം സ്വഭാവവ്യതിയാനങ്ങങ്ങള്‍,ദൈനംദിന പ്രവൃത്തികളിലെ മാന്ദ്യം തുടങ്ങിയ ലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ക്കു കാരണം.അറുപത്തഞ്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞവര്‍ക്കാണ് ഏറിയ പങ്കും കണ്ടു വരുന്നതെങ്കിലും അതിലും ചെറുപ്പമായവര്‍ക്കും അല്‍ഷിമേഴ്സ് അസാധാരണമല്ല. അമേരിക്കയില്‍ മാത്രം അവിടുത്തെ കണക്കുകള്‍ പ്രകാരം അറുപത്തഞ്ചു വയസില്‍ താഴെയുള്ള രണ്ടു ലക്ഷം അല്‍ഷെയ്മേഴ്സ് രോഗികള്‍ ഉണ്ട്.
