പൊതുവെ ചുമയാണ് ക്ഷയരോഗ ലക്ഷണമായി കരുതുന്നത് എന്നാൽ തലമുടിയും നഖവും പല്ലും ഒഴികെ ശരീരത്തിലെ ഏത് അവയവത്തെയും ക്ഷയരോഗം ബാധിക്കാം. മൈകോ ബാക്ടീരിയം ട്യൂബര്‍ക്യുലോസിസ്(എഎഫ്ബി) എന്ന രോഗാണുക്കളാണ് രോഗം പരത്തുന്നത്. രോഗി ചുമച്ചു തുപ്പുമ്പോള്‍ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില്‍ വ്യാപിക്കുന്ന രോഗാണുക്കളെ ശ്വസിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് രോഗം മറ്റുള്ളവരിലേയ്ക്ക് പകരുന്നത്. അപൂര്‍വമായി മാത്രമേ മറ്റു തരത്തിലുള്ള രോഗബാധയ്ക്ക് സാധ്യതയുള്ളൂ. മാസ്‌ക് ധരിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെയും ചുമയ്ക്കുകയും തുപ്പുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ തുവാലകൊണ്ട് മറച്ചുപിടിക്കുകയും, തുറസായ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില്‍ തുപ്പാതിരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതു വഴി രോഗം പകരുന്നതു തടയാം. ശ്വാസംവഴി രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ ശരീരത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചാല്‍ ശ്വാസകോശത്തില്‍ ഇടം കണ്ടെത്തി അവ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം തുടങ്ങുന്നു. വ്യക്തിയുടെ പ്രതിരോധശേഷിയെ ആശ്രയിച്ചായിരിക്കും രോഗലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുക. രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ ശരീരത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടുമാത്രം രോഗം വരണമെന്നില്ല. ശരീരത്തില്‍ കയറിയ രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ അവിടെ വെച്ചുതന്നെ ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്കുളളില്‍ നശിച്ചുപോകാം. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവിടെ ചെറിയ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കിയതിനുശേഷം പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ നശിച്ചുപോകാം. അതല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ശ്വാസകോശത്തില്‍ ഒരുപാട് കേടുപാടുകളുണ്ടാക്കി കഫം തുപ്പുന്ന രോഗിയാക്കിമാറ്റാം. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ അല്‍പാല്‍പമായി ശരീരത്തിന്റെ മറ്റ് അവയവങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കും കടന്ന് രോഗം മൂര്‍ച്ഛിക്കാനിടയാക്കിയേക്കാം. രോഗാണു ശരീരത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ അവയവത്തിലും എത്തിയാലും അവയെ കീഴ്‌പ്പെടുത്തി രോഗബാധയില്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലും രോഗിയെത്തിയെന്നുവരാം. അതും കൂടാതെ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ വിവിധഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ ഉറങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ടാകാം. രോഗാണുക്കളുടെ ശരീരത്തിലെ പെരുമാറ്റരീതി ശരീരത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിരോധശേഷിയെ ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കും. തീരെ പ്രതിരോധശേഷിയില്ലാത്തവര്‍ക്കാണ് ക്ഷയരോഗബാധയുണ്ടാകുന്നത്. പ്രതിരോധശേഷിയുള്ളവരില്‍ അണുക്കള്‍ ഉടന്‍തന്നെയോ പതുക്കെപതുക്കെയോ നശിക്കും. അതുമല്ലെങ്കില്‍ രോഗാണുക്കള്‍ ഉറങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന അവസ്ഥയിലാകും. എന്നെങ്കിലും പ്രതിരോധശക്തി കുറഞ്ഞ് അനുകൂല സാഹചര്യമുണ്ടായാല്‍ അവ വളരാന്‍തുടങ്ങും. ഈ രീതയില്‍ ശരീരത്തിലെ ഏത് അവയവത്തിലും ക്ഷയരോഗബാധ ഉണ്ടാകാം. ശ്വാസകോശത്തെയാണ് ബാധിക്കുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ കഫത്തോടുകൂടിയ ചുമ, പനി, ശ്വാസംമുട്ടല്‍ എന്നിവ ഉണ്ടാകാം. ശരീരം മെലിയുകയു.
