Aakash Chopra feels a loyalty test lies ahead for SA players and more cricket news

Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that the choice of picking between the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League and national duty is a “very difficult question” for the South African players, who are scheduled to play three ODIs on March 18, 20 and 23 followed by a two-Test series that runs between March 31 and April 12 against Bangladesh.

Given the bio-bubble protocols, any player entering the IPL bubble needs to mandatorily serve a three-day quarantine and RT-PCR tests before being allowed to join their squad. Therefore, any of South Africa’s IPL-bound players choosing to play the Bangladesh series can, even at the earliest, join their team on April 16.

As it stands, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have left it to players to make their choice and pick either playing Bangladesh series or joining their teams at the IPL, which starts from March 26 and will conclude on May 29.

“South Africa have said that they will tell the players that they have the option, let’s test your loyalty to the nation. Very difficult question to address because the ODI series will start on March 18, the IPL is starting on March 26 and there is a three-day quarantine before that,” Chopra weighed on the matter on his YouTube channel.

“The three ODIs are on March 18, 20 and 23. Quinton de Kock is an important member here, so he might not be available for the first match. Lucknow Super Giants – think about it, unless he decides to miss those ODIs,” he added.

In all, there are nearly a dozen players from South Africa who are a part of the 2022 IPL, including the likes of red-ball mainstays Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and youngster Marco Jansen, as well as white-ball regulars Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller and Dwaine Pretorious.

Former Indian cricketer and current President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly stated that he will not be able to tell what his legacy is as the President of the Indian cricket board.

Ganguly also added that he will instead leave it open to the fans to judge his legacy. Adding that his tenure has taken place in tough circumstances due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the cricketing legend said that Indian cricket is fortunate that in spite of the pandemic, they have had a majority of the cricket matches taking place.

“What’s my legacy? Well, I won’t be able to tell it now. Let’s see what happens. It is up to you all to judge my legacy, it is what it is. But it has been under tough circumstances due to Covid-19 over the last two years. The pandemic has wreaked havoc all over the world and we are fortunate that we could still manage to get a majority of cricket done,” said Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly also stated that everything has been put in place at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and both Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are working together, and there are also several other coaches who work with them as well. Adding that a new facility is now being built at the NCA, the 49-year-old concluded by stating that the new NCA facility will be completed in one and half years.

“We have put everything in place. Laxman and Rahul work together. There are coaches who work alongside them. The U-19 coaches, too, work with the NCA and some of them are currently with the team in the World Cup. The new NCA facility is being built, the construction will start probably this month. It will take 18 months to finish. Everything has been put in place,” concluded Sourav Ganguly.

Mankading or Browned? - Aakash Chopra Opens Up After MCC Introduces New Rules And More Cricket News

India’s veteran bowler Jhulan Goswami has achieved yet another landmark as she equalled the world record for the most wickets at Women’s World Cups. Lyn Fulltston from Australia had held the record previously with 39 wickets at World Cups while Carole Hedges (37), Clare Taylor (36) and Cathryn Fitzpatrick (33) follow her on the list.

Goswami attained the massive feat by going through the defences of New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Katey Martin during Women’s World Cup 2022. The right-arm seamer bowled nine overs and was quite economical, conceding just 41 runs including a maiden. Goswami went through an excellent spell of bowling against Pakistan in the previous game where she picked up two wickets for 26 runs in her 10 overs.

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria slammed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja’s ‘lame’ excuse on the pitch used for the first Test played between Pakistan and Australia. Being played at the Pindi stadium, the match ended in a dull draw as a total of 1187 runs were scored while only 14 wickets fell over the course of five days. The strip used for the game attracted a lot of criticism from the cricket experts as it had nothing for the bowlers.

With the Rawalpindi pitch becoming a center of criticism, PCB chief issued a statement saying although the pitch was not a good advertisement for Test cricket, the home side didn’t want to create a strip that put the contest in visitors’ lap. However, the statement did not went well for Kaneria as he lashed out on the PCB chief.

Former Indian player Aakash Chopra has opined on the recent changes in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) code of laws. The new changes will come into effect within this year. The cricket expert expressed his happiness that running out the non-striker for backing up too far is no longer deemed unfair by the MCC and is now shifted into the category of a run-out.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Caribbean all-rounder Kieron Pollard will not be retained by the Mumbai Indians for the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League. Pollard had a terrible time with the bat this season. In the 11 games that he played, he could manage only 144 runs at a poor average of 14.40.

Mumbai Indians had their worst season this year as they became the first team to be knocked out of the race. Towards the end of the league stage, Pollard was dropped from the playing XI as Rohit Sharma decided to give chances to the budding cricketers in the camp. The five-time champions, as a result of their dismal run, ended last in the points table.

RCB’s fairytale continued last night (May 25) thanks to Rajat Patidar, who played the innings of his life against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2022 Eliminator in front of a packed Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The stylish right-hander scored an unbeaten 112 off 54 balls as the batter took a heavy toll on some lacklustre bowling in the middle overs by the Super Giants. Patidar went on to thank Virat Kohli after the game via Twitter.

Patidar, who was originally not a part of the RCB squad, only joined the team as a replacement after an injury to Luvnith Sisodia. Meanwhile, he posted a picture of himself with former RCB skipper Virat Kohli and the post read “Thankyou @imVkohli for believing me!.”

Senior Bengal wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has made his stand clear on the upcoming Ranji knockout games and stated that he wouldn’t be part of them. The same has been confirmed by the Cricket Association of Bengal president Avishek Dalmiya after they requested the veteran to be part of the crucial fixtures for the state in the upcoming days.

It is to be noted that Saha wasn’t having a fine tune with his state in recent days and since the relations didn’t get better, this decision will bring an end to the wicketkeeper’s shining career with Bengal. He m

After being dropped from England’s team for the upcoming Test series against West Indies, veteran pacer James Anderson hopes that it is not the “end” of his career. The 39-year old bowler has scalped 640 wickets in longest form of the game and he is the third-most successful bowler in Test cricket. However, after facing a humiliating 0-4 loss by the hands of Australia down under, England Cricket Board (ECB) has dropped Anderson along with his new ball partner Stuart Broad.

The veteran pacer has expressed his frustration on a five-minute phone call he received from the board informing him about his release from the Test side. He has also emphasized that the upcoming director and head coach of the team should conduct a detailed discussion before making further decisions.

As per the latest developments, matches at the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand can go ahead with nine players in a line-up to keep the tournament going amid COVID-19. Ever since the global pandemic came in the picture, many major series and tournaments have been postponed and cancelled. In fact, some tournaments had to pause midway with the quickly-spreading virus hitting the camps.

In order to avoid the same, the playing conditions have been revised for the Women’s World Cup, which gets underway on March 4. Now, teams will be allowed to field a reduced line-up in case of a outbreak in their squad. In such cases, members within the coaching and support staff can come in as substitute fielders. ICC’s head of events Chris Tetley confirmed on Thursday (February 24).

Days before Australia’s departure for their first tour of Pakistan in 24 years, head coach Andrew McDonald has said that there are no safety concerns in the minds of Aussie players. Notably, both New Zealand and England had decided to cancel their respective tours of Pakistan last year, citing differet reasons. However, the Aussies have named a full-strength squad for both Tests and white-ball

Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals were involved in a high-scoring clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Batting first, Punjab’s opening batsman Mayank Agarwal launched an assault on the opposition batters as he played a blistering knock of 69 runs off just 36 deliveries.

Mayank along with skipper KL Rahul stitched a crucial partnership of 122 runs in 12.4 overs in which the latter played second fiddle and anchored the innings. Punjab was batting with a run rate of 10 and was expected to post a score of 220 to 225 runs. However, Mayank’s wicket in the 13th over put a temporary halt on the flow of the runs.

Rahul was looking decent in the middle and was expected to lead from the front to give time to other batsmen to settle. However, the skipper failed to accelerate and lost his wicket in the 16th over after playing a knock of 61 runs off 51 deliveries. Towards the end, Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan played quickfire-cameos as they scored 22 off 13 and 15 off 5.

However, Punjab Kings fell short of five runs from posting 200 runs on the board. The team’s inability of scoring 20 to 25 runs extra in the death overs made all the difference as Delhi Capitals won the match by six wickets with ten balls to spare. The former Indian cricketer and analyst Aakash Chopra opined on PBKS loss saying that KL Rahul will regret not accelerating his innings.

In what can be called a major development, Shane Watson is set to join Delhi Capitals as the assistant coach for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The former Australian all-rounder is one of the most prolific performers in the league’s history, having scored 3874 runs and taken 92 wickets in the competition. Having last played for Chennai Super Kings, Watson retired from professional cricket after the 2020 edition and has been an active commentator since then.

However, it has now been learnt that Delhi Capitals, who have qualified for the playoffs in the last three seasons, have bagged his services in the coaching department. It must be noted that the Delhi-based franchise has parted ways with Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, the assistant coaches from last season. Besides Watson, former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar is also being tipped to be another assistant coach.

Team India’s schedule is jam-packed en route to the T20 World Cup 2022. As per the latest developments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to induct three more white-ball overseas tours between the tour of England in July and the T20 World Cup in October-November. During their stay in UK, India are also scheduled to meet Ireland in a one-off T20I.

Meanwhile, India will host Sri Lanka in three T20Is and two Test matches in their latest assignment, which gets underway on February 24. The series will be followed by the two-month long Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which would see 10 teams in action. The Men in Blue will then host South Africa in five T20Is before flying off to England.

The Three Lions will host India in a one-off rescheduled Test, three ODIs and as many T20Is. As per a report in the Times of India, India will be tour West Indies, Zimbabwe and participate in Asia Cup in UAE as preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is due to start on October 16. With so many fixtures in schedule, bio-bubble fatigue would be a massive factor.
