A report finds that recently there has been a sharp increase in the malicious IoT botnet activity due to growing number of #IoTdevices in use. There are billions of IoT devices in use around the world, and this number is only going to increase in the future.
An expert says, there is lax in security of many IoT devices. Many IoT devices are not properly secured, making them easy targets for attackers. IoT botnet attacks can be very profitable for attackers, as they can be used to disrupt businesses, steal data, and launch other malicious activities.
According to the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2023, the number of IoT devices (bots) engaged in botnet-driven DDoS attacks rose from around 200,000 a year ago to approximately 1 million devices, generating more than 40% of all DDoS traffic today. This sharp increase in botnet activity has been driven by a number of factors.
The Report found that IoT botnet DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) traffic, originating from a large number of insecure IoT devices with the aim of disrupting telecom network services for millions of users, increased fivefold over the past year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stemming from the growing increase in profit-driven hacking collectives operated by #cybercriminals.

Threat actors can abuse the core features of Discord
Discord, a popular cross-platform application, hosted more than 19 million active servers related to different zhawnrus and topics (gaming, arts, marketing, finance, sports, etc.). As per a report, there are currently over 150 million monthly active users. Discord is a large-scale platform, used for chats, voice calls and videos. The platform has different features that allows users many functionalities in terms of management, data sharing, and connection preferences. However, these can also be used for malicious purposes like malware development, botnet setups, C2 communication and malicious file hosting. Check Point Software sees early indicators that threat actors are seeking to use Discord’s infrastructure for malicious intent, as malicious code geared for the Discord platform can be found on GitHub. In fact, threat actors can use malware to abuse the core features of Discord, including Discord API and Discord Bots. The potential outcome for a threat actor would be the enablement of malicious capabilities, such as screenshotting, key logging and executing files. The Discord API does not require any type of confirmation or approval and is open for everyone to use. Due to these Discord API freedoms, the only way to prevent Discord malware is by disabling all Discord bots. Preventing Discord malware can’t be done without harming the Discord community. As a result, it’s up to the users’ actions to keep their devices safe.
As of now, any type of file, malicious or not, whose size is less than 8MB can be uploaded and sent via Discord. Because the file content isn’t analyzed, malware can be easily spread via Discord. As Discord’s cache is monitored by modern AVs, it alerst a user in case a received file is considered malicious, the files remain available for download. In addition, the malware may be difficult to detect, as it can be classified

According to the Radware report, findings underscore 2021 as the year of the web application attack. Between 2020 and 2021, the number of malicious web application requests climbed 88%, more than double the year-over-year growth rate in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which were up 37% over 2020. The unprecedented increase in web application attacks did not, however, prevent DDoS from making a name for itself in 2021. The report details how last year saw multiple record-breaking DDoS attacks and ransom denial-of-service (RDoS) earn its place in the threat landscape. At the same time that big attacks were making headlines, the volume of micro floods, attacks which often go undetected, rose nearly 80% compared to 2020. The statistics tell a story about bad actors. They are getting smarter, more organized, and more targeted in pursuing their objectives — whether that be for money, fame, or a political cause. In addition, cybercriminals are shifting their attack patterns — from leveraging larger attack vectors to combining multiple vectors in more complex-to-mitigate campaigns. Ransomware operators and their affiliates, which now include DDoS-for-hire actors, are working with a whole new level of professionalism and discipline — something that we have not seen before.
As more businesses migrate critical resources and applications to the public cloud, attackers are adapting their tactics and techniques to match the scale of public cloud providers. While enterprises should not be immediately alarmed by reports of huge attacks, they do need to be aware that DDoS attacks are a part of their threat landscape, irrespective of their geography or industry. Companies hosting services in the public cloud need to be prepared for cloud-scale attacks. In 2021, more sophisticated and better organized operators advanced their tactics, adding more extortion capabilities to their arsenal. To bring reluctant victims back to the negotiating table, they launched trip

The first six months of 2022 were marked by a significant increase in DDoS activity across the globe. Attacks ranged from cases of hacktivism to terabit attacks in Asia and the United States. The number of malicious DDoS attacks climbed 203% compared to the first six months of 2021. There were 60% more malicious DDoS events during the first six months of 2022 than during the entire year of 2021.
In May 2022, Radware mitigated a volumetric carpet-bombing attack, which represented a total volume of 2.9 PB. The attack lasted 36 hours, peaking at 1.5 Tbps with a sustained attack rate of more than 700 Gbps for more than eight hours. The combination of duration, volume, and average/sustained attack rates makes this one of the most significant #DDoSattacks on record.
During the first six months of 2022, Radware observed an increase in malicious transactions targeting online applications, dominated by predictable resource location and injection attacks. The number of malicious web application transactions grew by 38%, compared to the first six months of 2021, surpassing the total number of malicious transactions recorded in 2020.
Predictable resource location attacks accounted for almost half (48%) of all attacks followed by code injection (17%) and SQL injection (10%). The most attacked industries were retail and wholesale trade (27%) and high tech (26%). Carriers and SaaS providers ranked third and fourth, shouldering 14% and 7% of the attacks respectively.
Major information and communication networks in the Philippines, including CNN, news network ABS-CBN, Rappler, and VERA Files, were the target of DDoS attacks in connection with the country’s 2022 general elections.
No organization in the world is safe from cyber retaliation at this time. Online vigilantes and hacktivists could disrupt wider security efforts driven by nations and authorities. New legions of actors could introduce extreme unpredictability for intelligence s

As per a recent #Checkpoint report, the AI lab’s latest creation is designed to respond to natural language dialogue and provide answers to complex queries. #ChatGPT is capable of understanding and responding to natural language queries in a variety of ways. The tool is built on the massive GPT-3 engine and can write code, solve problems and provide customer support.
Language interfaces are going to be a big deal. Talk to the computer (voice or text) and get what you want, for increasingly complex definitions of “want” ChatGPT is helping hackers write malware codes.
Soon you will be able to have helpful assistants that talk to you, answer questions, and give advice. Later you can have something that goes off and does tasks for you. Eventually you can have something that goes off and discovers new knowledge for you.
Hacking forums are full of tools built by criminals using OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. A report says, cybercriminals are using ChatGPT to develop malicious tools. In underground hacking forums, threat actors are creating infostealers, encryption tools and facilitating fraud activity. Check Point Research warns of the fast-growing interest in ChatGPT by cybercriminals and shares three recent cases, with screenshots, of the development and sharing of malicious tools using ChatGPT.
On December 29, 2022, a thread named “ChatGPT - Benefits of Malware” appeared on a popular underground hacking forum. The publisher of the thread disclosed that he was experimenting with ChatGPT to recreate malware strains and techniques described in research publications and write-ups about common malware.
Secondly, on December 21, 2022, a threat actor dubbed USDoD posted a Python script, which he emphasized was the ‘first script he ever created’. When another cybercriminal commented that the style of the code resembles openAI code, USDoD confirmed that OpenAI gave him a “nice helping hand to finish the script with a nice scope.”

Criminals are using a simple tactic to send malicious links, and it's working. They are embedding malicious links in images in emails. When the recipient opens the email, the image loads and the malicious link gets activated. It is a straightforward tactics to try and direct victims to phishing links - but the bad news is that it appears to be working. This can lead to malware infection, data theft, or other problems.
Usually, hackers would draft elaborate email trying to convince the victims to click on a link found at the bottom of the message. These emails would either tell the recipients they urgently needed to download an antivirus or cancel a pending transaction that will leave them broken, or something similar.
