A week after finishing 8th in the Sprint Cup Series' opening race, Patrick's car lost a tire on lap 176 exiting turn four during Sunday's Subway 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and smashed hard into the wall. After rebounding off of the SAFER barrier, Patrick's car collected David Ragan.

Patrick, who got out and walked away from the accident, wasn't the first driver on the day to suffer tire issues, as teammate Ryan Newman, among others, had previously hit the wall twice with right front problems. She said that there was no warning of any tire issues with her car before the crash and that the car suddenly drove straight to the right on her. Phoenix's flat layout is notoriously hard on brakes, especially those of ill-handling cars. Right front tires can have problems because of the buildup in brake heat from excessive usage in the corners.
Patrick officially started 40th and struggled with the handling of her car all day, never making much progress through the field before crashing. She finished 39th.

The accident on Lap 185 was further compounded when David Ragan slammed into her No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevy SS.
'Obviously I blew a right front,” Patrick said. “No real warning. I wasn't that tight either; I was sliding a little bit. I felt like most of the day I was chasing the rear. It was a little unexpected. I took a hard hit to the right, and then on the left. I'm fine.
“The cars and the tracks are so safe. As a driver that's a nice feeling. It doesn't change the fact that we aren't going to get any points really coming out of today, and it would have been nice.”
Patrick qualified 40th. She ran as high as 21st before she was collected in the 26th position. Patrick entered the weekend seventh in the Sprint Cup points standings after finished eighth last week in the season-opening Daytona 500. She finished 39th at Phoenix.
“It would have been nice to get these points here, and then ... especially off of our eighth last weekend (in the Daytona 500), and then have a decent run in (Las) Vegas,” Patrick said. “Then when they re-establish the pits and the garage area, we would have been in better shape. As if a headache and sore neck following a hard crash in last week's Phoenix race wasn't bad enough for Danica Patrick, her night as a dirt track race fan could have been better.
Patrick, attending a race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track, took a rock to the head on Thursday night, she said Friday.

'I feel like I have a concussion from last night,' she said, joking. 'It's really sore. It hit me straight in the head. Good thing I had a hat on, or I feel like there would have been blood.'
Patrick's boyfriend, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., owns the Stenhouse Jr. Racing team and fields dirt cars. And team owner Tony Stewart also is a dirt track aficionado -- he races on them and owns Eldora Speedway.
Joe Crowley, who is part of Patrick's public relations team, said Patrick had a prescheduled meeting with NASCAR medical Friday to follow up on some paperwork from her Phoenix crash.
Since NASCAR had heard of the rock incident, they gave her a minor checkup and asked if she was OK.
As for Phoenix, where Patrick blew a tire, sending her car hard into the wall, the Sprint Cup Series rookie said she experienced a sore neck for the first time after a crash.
Patrick said she did not believe she had a concussion — 'I really felt fine,' she said — and was cleared by the medical staff.
