Nobel prize-winning Austrian quantum physicist perhaps most famous for the mind experiment known as Schrödinger's Cat.

Google has celebrated the 126th birth anniversary of Erwin Schrödinger, the Nobel prize-winning Austrian quantum physicist, perhaps most famous for the mind experiment known as Schrödinger’s Cat.
Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933 for the introduction of Schrödinger's wave, a mathematical equation of wave mechanics that is still the most widely used piece of Mathematics in modern quantum theory.

Erwin Schrodinger was born in Vienna on the 12th August 1887 to Rudolf Schrodinger and Georgine Emilia Brenda.

He was initially tutored at home then studied theoretical physics at the University of Vienna under Franz S. Exner and Friedrich Hasenohrl. By 1911, he was already assisting Exner.

He later undertook military service, before returning to academia.

In 1925, while he was professor of physics at the University of Zurich, Schrödinger formulated a wave-equation that accurately gave the energy levels of atoms.

The theory won him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933 and was possibly his greatest contribution to the field.

Schrödinger’s other work was wide ranging including the physics of dielectrics, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, colour theory, electrodynamics, general relativity, and cosmology.

Erwin Schrodinger: Google doodle for the man who changed the face of physics

The late Nobel prize-winning physicist gave his name to the equation that lies at the heart of quantum mechanics as well as a feline paradox..

Google's latest doodle marks the birthday of Erwin Schrödinger, the Nobel prize-winning quantum physicist whose eponymous equation lies at the heart of quantum mechanics.

Born in Vienna in 1887 to a factory owner and his Austrian-English wife, Schrödinger was tutored at home as a child and went on to study theoretical physics at the University of Vienna before undertaking voluntary military service, later returning to academia to study experimental physics.

Renewed military service during the first world war broke up his studies before he was sent back to Vienna in 1917 to teach a course in meteorology.

However, it was not until his late 30s that he was to change forever the face of physics by producing a series of papers that were all written and published over the course of a six-month period of theoretical research.

By 1925, then a professor of physics at the University of Zurich and holidaying in the Alps, Schrödinger formulated a wave-equation that accurately gave the energy levels of atoms. It formed the basis of the work that would earn him the Nobel prize in physics in 1933.

In subsequent years, he repeatedly criticised conventional interpretations of quantum mechanics by using the paradox of what would become known as

Erwin Schrodinger's 126th birthday is the subject of Monday's Google doodle in select countries across the globe. The doodle depicts Austrian physicist's famous thought experiment, Schrodinger's cat, and a quantum mechanics equation.

Erwin Schrodinger was born on August 12, 1887 in Vienna, Austria, to Rudolf Schrodinger and Georgine Emilia Brenda. After being tutored at home, Erwin Schrodinger studied in Vienna under Franz S. Exner and Friedrich Hasenohrl. By 1911, he was assisting Exner.

He also enrolled in military service for a period of four years after writing his thesis and achieving habilitation. After several stints at universities in Jena, Stuttgart, Zurich and Berlin, Schrodinger decided to leave Germany and became a Fellow of Magdalen College at the University of Oxford. After that, he also had a stint at Princeton University. He returned to Austria in 1936 and took a position at the University of Graz.

Erwin Schrodinger's political stance lead to problems with the German university and fled to Italy with his wife. He moved to Dublin, Ireland in the same year and stayed there for 17 years, before returning to Vienna in 1956.

In his early years, Erwin Schrodinger worked in the fields of electrical engineering, atmospheric electricity, and atmospheric radioactivity but he's renowned for his work in quantum mechanics

He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for the discovery that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes in wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman scattering and is the result of the Raman effect.

The Soviet theoretical physicist was elected to the U.S.S.R.’s Academy of Sciences in 1946. Awarded the Lenin Science Prize, Landau has a crater on the moon named after him. As a young boy, he was “quiet & shy” but always brilliant at math and science. He passed away at 60 on April 1, 1968.
