US actress Karen Black, who played leading roles in 1970s films Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, died in Los Angeles on Thursday, her representatives said. She was 74.
Black had been suffering from cancer in recent years, her publicist, Elliot Mintz, said.
Black was best known for her role as Rayette, the big-dreaming waitress in the 1970 working-class drama Five Easy Pieces, in which she starred alongside Jack Nicholson.
The role earned Black a Golden Globe award for best supporting actress and an Oscar nomination.
She also played a prominent role as a country singer in the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's 1975 musical drama Nashville.
Black was diagnosed with ampullary cancer, which is similar to pancreatic cancer, in 2010, and made headlines earlier this year after turning to the internet to help fund her medical treatment. She and her husband raised about $62,000 (£40,000), according to her fundraising page.
Illinois-born Black won another best supporting actress Golden Globe award for the role of mistress Myrtle Wilson in 1974's The Great Gatsby and was also lauded for her role as an aspiring actress in the 1975 drama The Day of the Locust.

Hugely prolific, the Illinois-born actress appeared in more than 100 movies over a career spanning 40 years.
She shot to fame in 1969, starring as a prostitute in Easy Rider opposite Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.
She died at a clinic in Los Angeles, three years after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Her fourth husband, Stephen Eckelberry, posted the news on his Facebook page.
'It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago,' he wrote.
'Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.'
Stars paid tribute to Black on Twitter, including Mia Farrow who tweeted: 'Wonderful Karen Black rest in peace.'
Actress Juliette Lewis said: 'Karen Black was my mentor and a 2nd mother to me. She inspired everyone she came in contact with. Her spirit/strength My luv [sic] is beyond words.'

Singer-songwriter Joe South, who performed hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s such as 'Games People Play' and 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes' and also penned songs including 'Down in the Boondocks' for other artists, died Wednesday, his music publisher said. South was 72.
South, whose real name was Joseph Souter, died at his home in Buford, Ga., northeast of Atlanta, according to Marion Merck of the Hall County Coroner's office. Merck said South died after having a heart attack.
'He's one of the greatest songwriters of all time,' said Butch Lowery, president of the Lowery Group, which published South's music. 'His songs have touched so many lives. He's such a wonderful guy and loved by many.'
South worked as a session guitar player on recordings of some of the biggest names of the 1960s — Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel, among others. But he had a string of hits of his own starting in the late 1960s that made his booming voice a familiar one on radio stations, with a style that some described as a mix of country and soul.
