The wait is over, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a baby boy this afternoon. The child weighs 8 lbs and 6 oz., according to the official statement from Kensington Palace.

“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild,” the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall said in a statement. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.”

The baby will be known as the Prince of Cambridge and is third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and Prince William—Prince Harry will be now be fourth in line.

The official notice of the birth that detailed the gender of the child and time of delivery was carried from the hospital to Buckingham Palace, where the Queen’s press secretary Elsa Anderson placed it on a easel.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24 p.m.,” tweeted Clarence House, the official residence of Kate Middleton and Prince William. “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.”

Middleton went into labor early Monday morning, traveling by car from Kensington palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital, according to Clarence House officials. Prince William accompanied Middleton and was present for the birth.
