A fire that apparently began in an ice cream shop in Seaside Park on Thursday afternoon and swiftly consumed several blocks of the boardwalk that connects the Shore town and neighboring Seaside Heights, as well as buildings along the walkway, was finally brought to heel about 8 in the evening. Officials said at least 20 businesses along the boardwalk were destroyed or heavily damaged in the wind-whipped blaze, including familiar institutions such as Maruca's Pizza; the Carousel Arcade; the clubs Jack & Bill's, Beachcomber, and Sawmill; as well as a Kohr's frozen custard joint - where the fire apparently began. Hundreds of firefighters were involved and officials said two of them had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. 'I can't believe after all we went through . . . it's heartbreaking, devastating,' said Seaside Park Police Chief Francis Larkin, referring to the devastation left in the area a year ago by Hurricane Sandy. 'I think I'm gonna wake up and it'll be a bad dream.' Larkin said firefighters would continue dumping water on a 19-block stretch for 24 to 36 more hours. In a 10 p.m. briefing, Ocean County Fire Coordinator Brian Gabriel called the four boardwalk blocks that burned 'a war zone.' He said that the fire was 70 percent contained, with no threat of it spreading, but that firefighters continued to douse hot spots. A massive fire spitting fist-sized embers engulfed dozens of businesses along an iconic Jersey shore boardwalk Thursday, as workers racing to contain the blaze's advance ripped up stretches of walkway only recently replaced in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
That last-ditch effort to save the heart of the town's tourism business — and its very economic survival — appeared to have worked. Two hours after public works crews ripped out a eight metre swath of boardwalk that had been hurriedly rebuilt for a visit to Seaside Heights by Prince Harry in May, the flames had not advanced past the break.
Heavy equipment filled the breach with tall walls of sand to form makeshift dunes holding back not waves but fire.
'So far, so good,' said Robert Matthies, the mayor of neighboring Seaside Park, where the blaze began around 2:30 p.m.
The blaze remained out of control as of 8:30 p.m. but firefighters reported some progress in containing it.
The 6-alarm blaze began in a frozen custard stand on the Seaside Park portion of the boardwalk and fanned by 25-30 km/h winds from an approaching storm system, quickly spread north into Seaside Heights, the boardwalk town where the MTV series Jersey Shore was filmed — and where the October storm famously plunged a roller coast into the ocean.

A raging fire spewing fist-sized embers engulfed much of an iconic Jersey shore boardwalk Thursday, destroying more than 50 businesses and undoing months of rebuilding efforts after the inundation of superstorm Sandy.
Workers joined the fire in tearing into the boardwalk — a last-ditch effort to rob the inferno of fuel that helped preserve what was left of the economic lifeblood of Seaside Park and Seaside Heights.
The wind-whipped fire devoured eight blocks of boardwalk — four in each town — and caused millions of dollars in damage before workers halted its advance by ripping out a large section of boardwalk and piling up huge makeshift sand dunes meant to hold back fire, not water.
The blaze destroyed 32 businesses on the Seaside Park portion of the boardwalk, borough Councilwoman Nancy Koury told The Associated Press. Michael Loundy, a real estate agent who works with Seaside Heights on tourism projects, said 20 businesses were destroyed there.

The pier and surrounding condos are now being evacuated as firefighters battle a large blaze on the boardwalk in Seaside Park, NJ. The fire reportedly started at the Kohr Brothers at 1800 Boardwalk on the FunTown Amusement Pier around 2:15 p.m. It quickly reached five alarms before jumping to six shortly before 4 p.m.

As of 3:20 p.m., explosions had been reported within the building and multiple units were being called in to the scene. A large plume of black smoke was visible in the sky over much of the boardwalk looking north towards the pier.
Crews said they were having problems getting adequate water and with flying embers spreading the fire due to winds in the area. Some embers had blown as many as four blocks away.
Officials say some people are being treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews from Monmouth and Atlantic counties have been called in for assistance.
