Jon Brookes, drummer with British band The Charlatans, has died aged 44.
He had undergone treatment, including surgery , for a brain tumour after collapsing onstage in Philadelphia in 2010.
According to a post on the band's website, the founding member died in his sleep early this morning.
A statement from the band - who called Brookes 'one of the finest drummers of his generation' - read: 'Jon was a brilliant drummer, an inspiration, a founding member of The Charlatans, part of our family and a friend to everyone in and around the band.
'Losing someone who was always so full of life is a tragedy that will be shared by so many. Our thoughts are with Debbie and all of Jon’s family.'
The band's singer, Tim Burgess, tweeted: 'Jon Brookes, my friend, our drummer and inspiration to so many, passed away this morning. We are torn apart. Love & thoughts to Jon's family.'
Formed in 1989, the West Midlands rock band were most active in the nineties, and well-known for the top 10 hit 'The Only One I Know.' They had more than 20 other top 40 hits, including 'Blackened Blue Eyes' and 'One To Another'.

The musician passed away in hospital earlier this morning, surrounded by friends and family after battling against brain cancer for three years.
The star - who was diagnosed with the disease after collapsing on stage during a gig in Philadelphia in 2010 - had undergone a number of operations and recently rejoined his bandmates to work on new music.
However, a statement on the band's website announced the sad news. It read: 'It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Jon Brookes, the drummer with The Charlatans, died this morning aged 44.
'Following a seizure on tour in Philadephia in 2010, Jon had been receiving treatment for a brain tumour and had undergone several operations, although he had been working on new material with the band over the summer… He passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning with his family at his bedside.'
It continued: 'Jon was a founding member of The Charlatans, who formed in the West Midlands in 1989. He was much loved by those who knew him and regarded as one of the finest drummers of his generation and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The musician passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning surrounded by family, after battling with brain cancer.
He was first diagnosed after suffering a seizure and collapsing on stage in Philadelphia while on tour with the band in 2010.
Singer Tim Burgess paid tribute on Twitter, writing: 'Jon Brookes, my friend, our drummer and inspiration to so many, passed away this morning.
'We are torn apart. Love & thoughts to Jon's family.'

Jon had undergone a number of operations and rejoined the band to work on new material this summer.
After a recent operation he said: 'I will never be able to express my heartfelt thanks for all the love and light I received.'

Brookes was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010 after suffering a seizure and collapsing on stage during a gig with the group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was forced to sit out a lot of work with the band to undergo treatment, and The Verve drummer Pete Salisbury stepped in to replace him for a number of live shows. Brookes underwent his third operation just last month.
The musician was one of the founding members of the band back in the 1980s and shot to fame with the group during their 1990s heyday.
