Solemnity and mourning marked 'Yaum-e-Ashura' on Wednesday as the historic 'Bibi-ka-Alam' procession was taken out in the old city of Hyderabad in a traditional manner
Yaum-e-Ashura’ or the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed in memory of the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussain and his followers at the battle of Karbala
The 'Bibi ka alam', believed to contain a piece of wooden plank on which the Prophet's daughter Bibi Fatima Zehra was given the final ablution and installed over 430 years ago during the Qutub Shahi dynasty, was carried on a caparisoned elephant, brought from Karnataka. It started from Bibi Ka Alawa and passed through Sheikh Faiz Kaman, Yakutpura Darwaza, Etebar Chowk, Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Penjeshah, Mani Mir Alam, Purani Haveli and Darulshifa*Thousands of people participated in the 'Bibi ka alam' procession which passed through various parts of the old city before concluding at Chaderghat on the banks of the Musi river

The Constitution of the Republic of India came into effect on January 26 1950. The Indian Constitution is one of the longest & most comprehensive Constitutions in the world, safeguarding & ensuring equal rights for every Indian. January 26, each year, is celebrated as the Republic Day in India. The day is a National Holiday & a Dry Day.
The most elaborate celebration is organised in India country's capital, New Delhi. It involves march-pasts by the country's Armed Forces, with some of the most lethal weapon systems, missiles, Fighter Aircraft, Tanks etc, rolling down the Rajpath, with crowd of citizens cheering them on -- pure jingo wet-dream. It also showcases cultural tableau from the various states of India.
The best celebration, however, would be organized in my school, where our class teacher would hand out lozenges to us after the ceremony. On many a occasions, I'd also be recipient of a prize given out that day - pure glee. It would be followed by us running out to begin playing Football or Cricket for the rest of the day, long after dusk had settled in, much to the consternation of our folks in the pre-cellphone days. What days!
