    Hollywood star Tom Hanks, tipped for another Oscar in Captain Phillips, says he has Type 2 diabetes possibly thanks to weight fluctuations on screen.



    Tom Hanks, the Oscar-winning actor, has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and doctors said the dramatic weight fluctuations he underwent to play screen roles could have contributed to the condition.
    Hanks, 57, revealed on a late night US television chat show that he had been suffering symptoms for two decades but was only recently diagnosed.
    He told host David Letterman: 'I went to the doctor and he said 'You know those high blood sugar numbers you've been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you've graduated. You've got Type 2 diabetes, young man,''
    During his career Hanks, who has won two Best Actor Oscars, for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, has transformed his body to play characters authentically several times.
    In the 1992 film A League of Their Own he deliberately put on 30 pounds to play a baseball coach. When he starred in Cast Away in 2000 he lost 50 pounds to make himself believable as a man stuck on a desert island.

    Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is suffering from diabetes.

    The 57-year-old actor, who has been dealing with high blood pressure since the age of 36, revealed he has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a lifelong condition which occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin.

    'I went to the doctors and they said, 'You know those high blood sugar numbers you've been living with since you were 36, well you've graduated, you've got Type 2 Diabetes young man',' he told David Letterman on his show.

    The Oscar-winning actor has been advised to lose weight to help control the symptoms but believes he will struggle shedding the pounds.

    'Well it's controllable and through diet. My doctor said, 'If you can weigh what you weighed in high school, you'll essentially be completely healthy and not have Type 2 diabetes.' And I said, 'Well, I'm going to have Type 2 diabetes then',' he added.
