De Villota, who lost her right eye and fractured her skull in a horrific accident at a test at Duxford airfield in England in July last year, had likely died of 'natural' causes, the spokeswoman said, adding that an investigation was ongoing.

Although the 33-year-old recovered from the life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash, she no longer competed and had instead become an inspirational figure for aspiring female drivers. The news of her sudden passing stunned Spain and the motor racing world.

'We are assuming it was a natural death, but we cannot confirm anything,' a police spokeswoman said, adding that forensic scientists and police from the homicide unit would examine the scene.

De Villota, the daughter of former F1 racer Emilio De Villota, was appointed test driver for Anglo-Russian Formula One team Marussia a few months before her crash. However she never took part in a general test with other drivers.

Only a handful of women have driven Formula One cars in the last decade and none has come near to racing one in competition.

'I feel I owe it to her (to say something) because, out of the paddock and out of the motorsport bubble, she was an incredible character, she was a fighter,' Susie Wolff, a Williams development driver who had a test for Williams last

Female Formula 1 driver Maria de Villota has been found dead in a Spanish hotel room, according to reports this morning.

The 33-year-old, who lost her right eye in a testing accident just over a year ago, was found at around 7am this morning at the Hotel Savilla Congresos in Seville, where she had been due to give a lecture.

Emergency services were called, but attempts to revive her failed. Her cause of death is not yet known.

A statement from her family, quoted on website Marca, said: 'Dear friends: Maria has left us.

'She had to go to heaven like all angels. We are thankful to God for the extra year and a half that he left her with us.'

The former Marussia driver lost her eye in July 2012 after she suffered serious head and facial injuries in a crash during pre-British Grand Prix testing at Duxford Airfield in Cambridge.

She had completed her first run when her car suddenly accelerated and crashed into a lorry.

She was rushed by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital where she was operated on for several hours, but doctors were unable to save her right eye.

She was allowed home to her native Spain 18 days after the accident to continue her recovery, and she was cleared to drive again in February this year.

She said at the time, 'it feels like nothing ever happened'.

Ex-Formula One test driver Maria de Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville.

The 33-year-old Spaniard lost an eye and fractured her skull when she crashed into a truck at Duxford Aerodrome in Cambridgeshire on July 3 last year.

But although she no longer raced, she was said to have been rebuilding her life and had become part of the FIA's Women In Motorsport commission.

It is understood she was on a tour promoting her autobiography at the time of her death.

Spanish police said it appeared she died of natural causes.

'There are no signs of violence, but we need to wait for the autopsy,' a police spokeswoman said, adding that a forensic team was at the hotel.

She was the daughter of former F1 driver Emilio de Villota, and competed in F3, GTs, touring cars and the Superleague Formula before joining up with the Marussia team.

A statement on de Villota's Facebook page, signed by her family, read: 'Dear friends: Maria has left us.

    Maria de Villota found dead.

Maria de Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville, just days before she was due to launch the story of her life, and recovery from serious injury, in the Spanish city.

The 33-year old hit the headlines when she was appointed as a development driver for the Marussia F1 team late in 2011, and again when her first outing with the team - a straight-line test at RAF Duxford - ended in tragedy when her car accelrrated into a half-raised tail-lift on one of the team's support trucks.

The accident left her with serious head injuries, and cost her the use of her right eye, but de Villota appeared to have overcome the setbacks to return to motorsport in roles with both the Spanish motorsports authority and the FIA's Commission for Women and Motorsport.

She made her return to the F1 paddock at her home event in Barcelona, sporting what had become a trademark colourful eye-patch, and reports of her death rocked the paddock in Suzuka, where the Japanese Grand Prix is due to take place this weekend.

de Villota's passing was confirmed by her family via a message on her Facebook page which stated that 'Maria is gone. She had to go to heaven and all the angels. We thank God for the year-and-a-half more that he left us.'

The Marussia team issued a brief statement in response to the news of de Villota's death.

Jean Todt, FIA president: 'Today is a tragic day for motor sport. My deepest condolences go to the De Villota family. Maria was a fantastic driver, a leading light for women in motor sport and a tireless campaigner for road safety. Above all she was a friend I deeply admired. Through her courage, strength and determination she transformed her personal misfortune on the track into a powerful message for road safety that was heard at race tracks and beyond around the world. Maria was a beloved member of the FIA family. Our thoughts go to her family today.'
Pedro De La Rosa, Ferrari development driver, compatriot and friend: 'We were very close, all the racing community, but especially us being Spanish. She had a lot of strength, she was very happy. She had gone through a terrible year but she was now just married and she was so happy. I spoke with her two days ago and I'm very sad for her family.
