TSUNAMI Hits Japan After Huge 6.8 - 7.4 EarthQuakes - Nuclear Reactors Shutdown 14-03-2012

tsunami hit Japan's northeastern coastline Wednesday, NHK television reported, after a strong earthquake rocked the region nearly a year on from Japan's worst post-war natural disaster.

The 10-centimetre (four inch) wave and 6.8 magnitude quake, which struck some 210 kilometres (130 miles) off the northern island of Hokkaido, prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents.

Japan's meteorological agency had initially said the tsunami could be as high as 50 centimetres, but US monitors said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat.

The warning comes after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a monster tsunami on March 11 last year that killed more than 19,000 people and crippled Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, sparking the world's worst atomic accident in a generation.

There were no reports of damage at nuclear facilities in the area affected by Wednesday's 6.8 quake, the Kyodo news agency said.

The meteorological agency also warned the tsunami could reach the Kuril islands, off Hokkaido, which Russia has controlled since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II.

On Sunday, Japan fell silent to remember last year's tragedy with tearful families gathering in towns and villages across the country's shattered northeast to remember those they lost as the towering waves smashed ashore.

101 2.5 magnitude plus Earthquakes rattle Southern California 8/30/12

A rash of moderate quakes shook the south end of the Salton Sea Sunday, and the largest quakes were felt from Orange County and San Diego east into Arizona.

'What we're seeing is a classic Brawley seismic swarm,' USGS seismologist Lucy Jones told City News Service. 'We haven't seen one of these since the 1970s, and there was another one back in the 1930s.'

Some buildings were evacuated in Brawley, a small farm town 115 miles east-northeast of San Diego. 'It's pretty bad, we had to evacuate the hotel just for safety,' said Rowena Rapoza, office manager at the Best Western Hotel there.

Jones said USGS seismographs and analysis computers were overwhelmed by the rash of rattling that began at sunrise, and reached a crescendo with a magnitude 5.3 quake just after 12:30 p.m. It was followed by a 4.9 shaker within two minutes.

'Our system is choking on so many earthquakes,' Jones said. 'This area of California is deep soils, and we do not get as precise data as we do over the rest of the state, and that makes our data a little less precise.'

Preliminary computerized USGS reports had indicated that three quakes larger than magnitude 5.3 had rattled out from Brawley at 12:30. That was later resolved by seismologists to be two quakes, magnitude 5.3 and 4.9, Jones told CNS.

The quakes were strongly felt at Borrego Springs, in San Dieg

No tsunami warning or casualties reported.

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off Russia's eastern coast on Friday, briefly prompting a tsunami scare but causing no casualties or substantial damage, Russian emergency authorities said.

The epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 385 miles (620 km) in the Sea of Okhotsk, 244 miles (390 km) west of the nearest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the main city on the Kamchatka peninsula and home to a nuclear submarine base, and on Sakhalin island, where Russia's largest liquefied natural gas project is located.

Regional emergency authorities issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin and the Kurile islands, advising residents of dangerous areas to seek high ground, but lifted the warning several minutes later.

Residents of northern Japan felt the quake but there was no tsunami warning from Japan's meteorological agency.
