न्यूयॉर्क पहुँचने पर उनका जॉन एफ कैनेडी हवाई अड्डे पर भव्य सुवागत किया गया,स्वागत करने वालों में तुर्की के विदेश मंत्री और न्यूयॉर्क में तुर्की के राजदूत सहित अन्य लोग शामिल रहे।
तय्यब एर्दोगान 23 सितंबर से 27 सितंबर तक न्यूयॉर्क में रहेंगे,जहां वो शरणार्थियों के मुद्दे पर तमाम राष्ट्रों का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रहे लोगों को सम्बोधित करेंगे,और इस मुद्दे पर लोगों को तवज्जह दिलाएंगे। इस साल की बैठकों के लिए यूएन जनरल असेंबली का विषय “संयुक्त राष्ट्र को सभी लोगों के लिए प्रासंगिक बनाना: शांतिपूर्ण, न्यायसंगत और सतत समाजों के लिए वैश्विक नेतृत्व और साझा जिम्मेदारियां।” 25 सितंबर और 1 अक्टूबर के बीच, सदस्य राज्यों के नेता अपने भाषण देंगे।.
