ബോട്സ്വാനയിലെ ഒക്കാങ്കാവോ വന്യജീവി സങ്കേതത്തിന് സമീപമാന് ഈ അരുംകൊല നടന്നത്. ഇവിടെ 87 ആനകളെ വെടിവെച്ച് കൊന്ന് കൊമ്പുകള്‍ മുറിച്ചുമാറ്റിയ നിലയില്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി. ആകാശ സര്‍വ്വെക്കിടെയാണ് ഇത്രയധികം ആനകളുടെ മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.
ഏറ്റവുമധികം ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ ആനകള്‍ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന രാജ്യമാണ് ബോട്സ്വാന. നിലവിലെ സെന്‍സസ് പ്രകാരം ഒരു ലക്ഷത്തി മുപ്പതിനായിരം ആനകളാണ് രാജ്യത്തുള്ളത്. ഈ കണക്കുകള്‍ കണ്ടാണ് വേട്ടക്കാര്‍ ബോട്സ്വാനയിലേക്ക് തോക്ക് ചൂണ്ടുന്നത്. രാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ അതിര്‍ത്തിക്ക് പുറത്തുനിന്നും വേട്ടക്കാര്‍ ആനകളെ ഉന്നംവെച്ച് എത്തുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് എലഫന്റ്സ് വിത്തൌട്ട് ബോര്‍ഡേഴ്സ് എന്ന സംഘടനയുടെ തലവനായ മൈക്ക് ചെയ്സ് പറയുന്നു.
ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ മറ്റ് ഏതൊരു രാജ്യത്ത് നടക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ ആനവേട്ട ബോട്സ്വാനയില്‍ നടക്കുന്നുവെന്നും 2015ലെ സെന്‍സസ് പ്രകാരം ആനവേട്ട ഇരട്ടിയായെന്നും ചെയ്സ് പറഞ്ഞു. ആനവേട്ട തടയാനുള്ള ആന്റി പോച്ചിങ് യൂണിറ്റിനുള്ള തുക പുതിയ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ അധികാരത്തിലെത്തിയതോടെ വെട്ടിക്കുറച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതും വേട്ടക്കാര്‍ക്ക് സഹായകരമായെന്ന് പരാതിയുണ്ട്.
ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ പൊതുവെ ആനകളുടെ എണ്ണത്തില്‍ കുറവുണ്ട്. 2007നും 2014നും ഇടയില്‍ ആനകളുടെ എണ്ണം 30 ശതമാനം കുറഞ്ഞു. ഒടുവിലത്തെ സെന്‍സസ് പ്രകാരം ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ 18 രാജ്യങ്ങളിലായി മൂന്ന് ലക്ഷത്തി അന്‍പത്തിരണ്ടായിരത്തി ഇരുന്നൂറ്റി എഴുപത്തൊന്ന് ആനകളാണുള്ളത്.
