I would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the UPA Government in fostering a free, pluralistic and independent media. Our initiatives aim to bridge the 'Information Divide' and to provide our citizens knowledge and information so as to equip them to respond to social, economic and technological challenges. Our communication architecture is aimed at empowering our people with quality information. Through the innovative use of social media, I am confident that our Government will address and strengthen the communication needs of an aspirational India and connect with our younger generations.
The National Media Centre is just the latest step in addressing the diverse communication needs of our country in the future. I congratulate the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on this achievement and urge it to remain at the cutting edge of media innovation.

21 years after it was first conceptualized during the 8th five year plan (1992-97), the National Media Centre is finally ready to make it's debut among the institutions that underpin our democratic edifice. I would like to congratulate all those who persevered to translate this vision into a reality.
While we have endeavoured to create a space we hope thought leaders, scholars, media professionals and people in public affairs would invigorate it into a vibrant institution that reinforces the core value of the idea of India.
We live in an era of an information overload. The media landscape has transformed exponentially over the past 2 decades. This transformation has brought it's own set of challenges to the media industry. India today mirrors the world in global cross media consumption patterns.

While addressing the gathering Sonia Gandhi, who is also the Congress President, said that media need not be the enemy of the government and also said that the government welcome all criticism.
In her address Sonia Gandhi asserted 'Media and the government often disagree. The editorial columns and the voices of the prime time news provide ample evidence for this. But I venture to say that this can be healthy and there need not be any antagonism between the two'.

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.
