കര്‍ണ്ണാടകയിലെ മാണ്ഡ്യ ജില്ലയില്‍ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ചരിത്രത്തോട് ചേര്‍ന്നു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ നഗരം കാവേരി നദിയുടെ രണ്ട് ശാഖകള്‍ക്കിടയിലായി ഒരു ദ്വീപെന്ന പോലെ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.പതിമൂന്ന് കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വിസ്തീര്‍ണ്ണമുള്ള ഈ പട്ടണം മൈസൂരിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്നാണുള്ളത്. സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ ഹൈദരലിയുടെയും മകന്‍ ടിപ്പുവിന്റെയും കാലത്ത് മൈസൂരിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി മാറിയതോടെയാണ് ശ്രീരംഗപട്ടണം പ്രശസ്തമാകുന്നത്.
ടിപ്പു സുല്‍ത്താന്റെ ഭരണത്തില്‍ മൈസൂര്‍ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ആധിപത്യം തെക്കേ ഇന്ത്യ മുഴുവനും വ്യാപിക്കുകയും ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായി ശ്രീരംഗപട്ടണം മാറുകയും ചെയ്തു. ടിപ്പു സുല്‍ത്താന്റെ കൊട്ടാരങ്ങളും കോട്ടകളും ചരിത്രസ്മാരകങ്ങളും ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടവയാണ്. ദരിയ ദൗലത്ത്, ജുമാമസ്ജിദ്, ഗുംബാസ് തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് ഇവയില്‍ പ്രശസ്തമായത്.
ഒറ്റ കവാടമുള്ള ശ്രീരംഗപട്ടണം കോട്ട കടക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആദ്യം സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുന്നത് മുതലപ്പൊഴിയാണ്.
കോട്ടമതിലിന്റെ ചുറ്റുമാണ് മുതലപ്പൊഴി നിര്‍മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കോട്ടയുടെ സുരക്ഷക്കായി ടിപ്പു ഇവിടെ മുതലകളെ വളര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നു.നാന്നൂര്‍ ഏക്കറോളം വരുന്ന കോട്ട ഇന്ന് ജനവാസ കേന്ദ്രമാണ്. എന്നാലും ടിപ്പുവിന്റെ കാലത്തെ കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ഇവിടെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.കോട്ടയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഏതാനും വാര അകലെയാണ് ടിപ്പുവിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തമായ വേനല്‍ക്കാല വസതിയായ ദരിയദൗലത്. നദീതീരത്ത് വിശാലവും മനോഹരവുമായ പുന്തോട്ടത്തിന് നടുവില്‍ തേക്കിന്‍ തടിയില്‍ പണിതിരിക്കുന്ന ഇതിന്റെ അകത്തളങ്ങളില്‍ വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്തും സുഖകരമായ തണുപ്പാണ്.1782-84 കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ടിപ്പു പണികഴിപ്പിച്ച ഗുംബാസ് ആണ് ഗ്രീരംഗപട്ടണത്തെ മറ്റൊരാകര്‍ഷണം. മനോഹരമായ ഉദ്യാനത്തിന് നടുവില്‍ പണിതിരിക്കുന്ന ഇവിടെയാണ് സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങളുടെ അന്ത്യവിശ്രമം.
