ഭരതനാട്യം നർത്തകി നടരാജാണ് പത്മ അവാർഡ് നേടിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചരിത്രത്തിലാദ്യമായാണ് ഒരു ട്രാൻസ് നർത്തകിക്ക് അവാർഡ് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്. തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ മധുരയിലാണ് ട്രാന്‍സ്‌വുമണായ നര്‍ത്തകി നടരാജയുടെ ജന്മസ്ഥലം . പത്മ പുരസ്കാരമെന്ന ചരിത്രനേട്ടത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് നർത്തകിയുടെ ചുവടുവെയ്പ്പ് എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നില്ല.ട്രാൻസ് വ്യക്തിതം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞതോടെ ചെറുപ്രായത്തിൽ തന്നെ നടരാജ് വീട് വിട്ടു.പത്താം വയസ്സിലായിരുന്നു പെണ്മയോടുള്ള തന്റെ താത്പര്യം നടരാജ് തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത്. പിന്നീടങ്ങോട്ട് അവഗണയും അവഹേളനങ്ങളും മാത്രം . നൃത്തങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത് തിരിച്ചെത്തുമ്പോൾ കിട്ടിയ സമ്മാനങ്ങൾ ഒളിപ്പിച്ചു വയ്ക്കേണ്ട അവസ്ഥ. ഒടുവിൽ വീട്ടുകാർ അറിഞ്ഞു. പിന്നെ അവിടെ തുടരാൻ കഴിയാതായി. ഇതേ അവസ്ഥ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന സുഹൃത്ത് ശക്തിക്കൊപ്പം വീടുവിട്ട് നൃത്തം പഠിക്കാൻ പോയതാണ് നടരാജിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ചത്.ട്രാന്‍സ് വ്യക്തിത്വങ്ങളോടുള്ള സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ അവഗണനയെ ചെറുത്തുതോല്‍പിച്ചാണ് നൃത്തരംഗത്ത് ഇവര്‍ മുന്‍നിരയിലെത്തിയത്.പ്രശസ്ത നർത്തകി വൈജയന്തിമാലയുടെ ഗുരുവായ കെ.പി കിട്ടപ്പപ്പിള്ളയെ സമീപിച്ച് സ്ത്രീയായി കരുതി നൃത്തം പഠിപ്പിക്കണമെന്ന് അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. ഭിന്നലിംഗക്കാരിയായതിനാൽ ആട്ടിയോടിക്കുമെന്നാണ് കരുതിയത്. എന്നാൽ കിട്ടപ്പപ്പിള്ള നടരാജിനെ ശിഷ്യയായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു . അങ്ങനെ നടരാജ് നർത്തകി നടരാജായി. അദ്ദേഹം നടരാജിനെ ശിഷ്യയായി സ്വീകരിച്ചെങ്കിലും സമൂഹം എതിരായിരുന്നു. 14 വര്‍ഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കീഴില്‍ നര്‍ത്തകി നൃത്തം അഭ്യസിച്ചു.പരിഹാസങ്ങളും അവഹേളനങ്ങളും നിരവധിയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഇതിനെയെല്ലാം തൃണവർഗണിച്ചാണ് നർത്തകി നൃത്തജീവിതം തുടങ്ങിയത്. ആറാമത്തെ വയസുമുതൽ നൃത്തം അഭ്യസിച്ച് വരുന്നു.സ്വന്തം കഴിവിലുള്ള വിശ്വാസമാണ് മനുഷ്യനെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിക്കുന്നതെന്നാണ് നർത്തകി ഒരു അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞത്.പതിനാലു വർഷം ഗുരുവിന്റെ വീട്ടിൽ തന്നെ താമസിച്ചു പഠിച്ചു. തഞ്ചാവൂരിന്റെ സ്വന്തം നായകി ഭാവ നൃത്ത പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ പിന്തുടർച്ചക്കാരിയായി. മധുരയിൽ നർത്തകി നൃത്യ കലാലയ നൃത്ത വിദ്യാലയം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു .ചെന്നൈയിൽ വെള്ളിയമ്പലം സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഡാൻസ് എന്ന വിദ്യാലയവും സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഈ വിദ്യാലയത്തിന് അമേരിക്കയിലും ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലും കാനഡയിലും ശാഖ
