सन् 1912 में मशहूर अभिनेत्री और नृत्य निर्देशक ज़ोहरा सहगल का जन्म हुआ था। बॉलीवुड में 'लाडली' के नाम से चर्चित ज़ोहरा ने 'हम दिल दे चुके सनम', 'दिल से' और 'चीनी कम' जैसी चर्चित फ़िल्मों में अभिनय किया था। वर्ष 2010 में ज़ोहरा सहगल को पद्म विभूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया था।

सन् 1896 में एथेंस में ओलम्पिक खेलों का आधुनिक रूप में आयोजन हुआ था। वर्ष 1894 में पेरिस में आयोजित एक सम्मेलन में अंतरराष्ट्रीय ओलम्पिक समिति की स्थापना हुई थी। यह अपने आप में उस समय की पहली और सबसे बड़ी खेल प्रतियोगिता थी, जिसमें 14 देशों के खिलाड़ियों ने विविध प्रतियोगिताओं में हिस्सा लिया था।
सन् 1908 में राजनेता, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, सांसद और कैबिनेट मंत्री के तौर पर देश की सेवा करने वाले बाबू जगजीवन राम का जन्म हुआ था। जगजीवन राम ने 1928 में कोलकाता के वेलिंगटन स्क्वेयर में एक विशाल मज़दूर रैली का आयोजन किया था, जिसमें लगभग 50 हज़ार लोग शामिल हुए थे। वर्ष 1977 में आपातकाल के दौरान जगजीवन राम कांग्रेस से अलग हो गए और 'कांग्रेस फॉर डेमोक्रेसी' नाम की पार्टी का गठन किया और जनता गठबंधन में शामिल हो गए। इसके बाद सन् 1980 में उन्होंने कांग्रेस (जे) का गठन किया।
सन् 1957 में देश और दुनिया में पहली बार लोकतांत्रिक तरीके से केरल में चुनाव संपन्न हुआ था और कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के ईएमएस नम्बूदरीपाद ने मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण की थी।
सन् 1993 में मशहूर बॉलीवुड अभिनेत्री दिव्या भारती की रहस्यमय तरीके से मौत हो गई थी। सन् 1990 में दिव्या ने अपने फ़िल्मी करियर की शुरुआत तेलुगु फिल्म 'बोब्बिली राजा' से की थी। लेकिन उनके सफल करियर की शुरुआत हिन्दी फ़िल्म विश्वात्मा से हुई थी। इस फ़िल्म के 'सात समुन्दर पार गाने' से दिव्या भारती को एक अलग पहचान दिलाई।

सन् 1931 में बांग्ला फ़िल्म की मशहूर अभिनेत्री सुचित्रा सेन का जन्म हुआ था। अपने फ़िल्मी करियर में सुचित्रा ने 60 फ़िल्मों में काम किया, जिनमें से 30 फ़िल्मों में अभिनेता उत्तम कुमार के साथ काम किया। सन् 1972 में सुचित्रा सेन को पद्मश्री सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया।
सन् 1994 में अफ़्रीका में कबीलों की हिंसा से जूझ रहे दो छोटे-छोटे देश रवांडा-बुरुंडी के राष्ट्रपतियों की विमान दुर्घटना में मौत हो गई थी। रवांडा और बुरुंडी में हुतू और तुत्सी कबीलों के लोगों के बीच ख़ूनी रंजिश का इतिहास बरसों से चला आ रहा था और इसी संबंध में दोनों देशों के राष्ट्रपति बातचीत के लिए एक साथ तंजानिया की बैठक में शामिल हुए थे और वहां से लौटने के दौरान यह दुर्घटना हुई थी।
सन् 1997 में नासा ने कोलंबिया अंतरिक्ष यान को ज़मीन पर वापस आने की घोषणा की थी। नासा के अनुसार यान की ईंधन ईकाई में कुछ समस्याएं थीं, जिसकी वजह से इसे जल्दी वापस बुलाने का फ़ैसला किया गया था।

सन् 1973 में अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति रिचर्ड निक्सन ने वॉटरगेट कांड की ज़िम्मेदारी ली थी, लेकिन रिचर्ड ने निजी तौर पर ज़िम्मेदार होने की बात का खंडन किया था। वर्ष 1972 में वॉटरगेट स्थित डैमोक्रेटिक पार्टी के मुख्यालय में पांच लोगों को चोरी-छिपे घुसते हुए गिरफ़्तार किया गया था।

सन् 1836 में तैमूर लंग का जन्म हुआ था। तैमूर गज़ब के सैन्य अगुवा थे, जिन्होंने मध्य और दक्षिण-पश्चिम एशिया के अधिकतर हिस्सों को जीत लिया था। तैमूर के शासन को बर्बरता और सांस्कृतिक उपलब्धि, दोनों के संबंध में ही याद किया जाता है।

सन् 1894 में राष्ट्रीय गीत तैयार करने वाले महान कवि बंकिम चंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय का निधन हुआ था। बंकिम चंद्र 19वीं शताब्दी के बंगाल के प्रकाण्ड विद्वान तथा महान कवि और उपन्यासकार थे। इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं आनंदमठ, कपाल कुण्डली और मृणालिनी हैं।
सन् 1929 में भारतीय स्वतन्त्रता आन्दोलन के दौरान दिल्ली सेंट्रल असेम्बली में बम फेंकने के जुर्म में भगत सिंह और बटुकेश्वर को गिरफ़्तार किया गया था। बम फेंककर इन्होंने ख़ुद को गिरफ़्तार कराया और अपनी आवाज़ जनता तक पहुंचाने के लिए अपने मुक़दमे की पैरवी भगत सिंह ने ख़ुद ही की। इस मामले में भगत सिंह और बटुकेश्र्वर दत्त को आजीवन कारावास मिला।

3....सन् 1961 में रूसी-सोवियत पायलट और कॉस्मोनॉट यूरी गैगरिन अंतरिक्ष में पहुंचने वाले पहले इंसान थे। उनके स्पेसक्राफ्ट ने पृथ्वी की ऑरबिट पूरी की थी। 16 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने बतौर फांउड्रीमैन के तौर पर ट्रेनिंग की और बाद में ट्रैक्टर के बारे में पढ़ाई की। मिग-15 ट्रैनिंग जेट हादसे में उनकी मौत हो गई थी।

1.. सन् 1699 में गुरु गोबिंद सिंह ने खालसा पंथ की स्थापना की। इस दिन उन्होंने सर्वप्रथम पाँच प्यारों को अमृतपान करवा कर खालसा बनाया और उसके बाद उन पाँच प्यारों के हाथों से स्वयं भी अमृतपान किया। सतगुरु गोबिंद सिंह ने खालसा महिमा में खालसा को 'काल पुरख की फ़ौज' पद से नवाज़ा। तलवार और केश तो पहले ही सिखों के पास थे, गुरु गोबिंद सिंह ने 'खंडे बाटे की पाहुल' तैयार कर कछा, कड़ा और कंघा भी दिया| इसी दिन खालसे के नाम के पीछे 'सिंह' लग गया।
2.. सन् 1919 में अंग्रेजों द्वारा जलियांवाला बाग हत्याकांड को अंजाम दिया गया था। जलियांवाला बाग में बैसाखी के दिन रोलेट एक्ट का विरोध करने के लिए एक सभा को भंग करने के लिए अंग्रेज अफसर जनरल रेजीनल्ड डायर ने बिना किसी चेतावनी के अंधाधुंध गोलियां चलवा दीं थीं, जिसमें बच्चे, बूढ़े, महिलाएं और पुरुष मारे गए। बाग से निकलने का सिर्फ एक ही रास्ता था, जिस पर अंग्रेज सिपाही मौजूद थे। गोलियों से बचने के लिए कई लोगों ने वहां बने एक कुएं में ही छलांग लगा दी थी। बाग की दीवारों पर आज भी गोलियों के निशान मौजूद हैं।
3.. सन् 1960 में अमेरिका ने विश्व के पहले परिवहन उपग्रह 'ट्रांजिट-1 बी' का प्रक्षेपण किया था। इसका मकसद अमेरिकी नौसेना को समुद्री मार्ग बताना था, ताकि हादसे न हों और उनके आने-जाने का पता चल सके। इस सैटेलाइट के बाद करीब चार और ऐसे उपग्रह छोड़े गए। इन उपग्रहों ने 1991 तक अमेरिकी नौसेना को अपनी सेवाएं दीं । इनके आधार पर ही अमेरिका ने दुनिया का सबसे बेहतरीन नेविगेशन सिस्टम ‘ग्लोबल पोजिशनिंग सिस्टम-जीपीएस’ बनाया।

सन् 1469 में सिखों के प्रथम गुरु और सिख धर्म के संस्थापक गुरू नानक देव जी का जन्म हुआ था। श्री गुरु-ग्रन्थ साहब' में गुरू नानक देव जी रचनाएं 'महला-1' के नाम से संकलित हैं। गुरु नानक की शिक्षा का मूल निचोड़ यह है कि परमात्मा एक, अनन्त, सर्वशक्तिमान, सत्य, कर्त्ता, निर्भय, निर्वर, अयोनि, स्वयंभू है। वह सर्वत्र व्याप्त है। मूर्ति-पूजा आदि निरर्थक है। बाह्य साधनों से उसे प्राप्त नहीं किया जा सकता।
सन् 1865 में राष्ट्रपति अब्राहम लिंकन के निधन के बाद अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति के तौर पर एंड्रयू जॉनसन ने शपथ ग्रहण की। 14 अप्रैल को ‘जॉन वाइक्स बूथ’ ने नाटक देखते वक़्त लिंकन को सिर पर गोली मार दी थी और 15 अप्रैल की सुबह लिंकन का निधन हो गया। लिंकन के निधन के बाद तत्कालीन उपराष्ट्रपति ‘एंड्रयू जॉनसन’ ने राष्ट्रपति पद की कमान संभाली।
