देश की राजधानी दिल्ली और वाराणसी दुनिया के 20 सबसे अधिक प्रदूषित शहरों में से एक है। इस सूची में भारत के 14 शहर शामिल हैं। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ( डब्ल्यूएचओ ) के आंकड़ों से इसकी जानकारी हुई। इन शहरों में 2016 में प्रदूषण का स्तर पीएम 2.5 स्तर पर था। आंकड़ों में यह भी कहा गया है कि दुनिया के 10 में से 9 लोग श्वसन के दौरान प्रदूषकों के उच्च स्तर वाली वायु ग्रहण करते हैं।

രാജ്യ തലസ്ഥാനമായ ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും അരക്ഷിതമായ നഗരമെന്ന് ദേശീയ ക്രെം റെക്കോഡ് ബ്യൂറോയുടെ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്.2016ല്‍ ഓരോ മണിക്കൂറിലും, 23 ക്രിമിനല്‍ കേസുകള്‍ വീതമാണ് ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. രാജ്യത്തെ പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കെതിരെ ഏറ്റവും അധികം അതിക്രമങ്ങള്‍ അരങ്ങേറുന്ന നഗരവും ഡല്‍ഹിയാണ്. 19 മെട്രോ നഗരങ്ങളിലെ കണക്കുകള്‍ വിശകലനം ചെയ്ത റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടാണിത്. ദില്ലിയില്‍ ദിനംപ്രതി 20 കുട്ടികള്‍ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ കേസുകളില്‍ ഇരയാകുന്നുവെന്നതും മറ്റൊരു വസ്തുത. വാഹനമോഷ്ടാക്കളുടെ കാര്യത്തിലും രാജ്യതലസ്ഥാനമാണ് ഒന്നാമത് . 74293 വാഹനങ്ങളാണ് കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം മോഷണം പോയത്. കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ കണക്കും ദില്ലിയില്‍ നാള്‍ക്കു നാള്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചു വരികയാണ്.
