1910 में समाजसेवी मदर टेरेसा का जन्म हुआ था। 12 वर्ष की उम्र से ही मदर टरेसा समाजसेवा करने लगी थीं। 1929 में मदर टरेसा कोलकाता पहुंचीं। 1944 में वह सेंट मैरी स्कूल की हेडमास्टर बन गईं। मदर टेरेसा ने आवश्यक नर्सिग ट्रेनिंग पूरी की और 1948 में वापस कोलकाता आ गईं और वहां से पहली बार तालतला गईं, जहां वह ग़रीब बुजुर्गों की देखभाल करने वाली संस्था के साथ रहीं। 1949 में मदर टेरेसा ने ग़रीब, असहाय और अस्वस्थ लोगों की मदद के लिए ‘मिशनरीज ऑफ चैरिटी’ की स्थापना की, जिसे 1950 में रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च ने मान्यता दी। इसी के साथ ही उन्होंने पारम्परिक वस्त्रों को त्यागकर नीली किनारी वाली साड़ी पहनने का फैसला किया। मदर टेरेसा को पद्मश्री, नोबेल पुरस्कार, भारत रत्न, मेडल आफ़ फ्रीडम सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया।
1994 में इंसानी दिल को चलाने के लिए पहली बार बैटरी का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। दक्षिणी इंग्लैंड के रहने वाले 62 वर्षीय पुरुष के शरीर में बैटरी से चलने वाले दिल का पैपवर्थ अस्पताल में सफल ऑपरेशन किया गया। इस व्यक्ति के निरंतर ख़राब होते स्वास्थ्य के चलते डाक्टरों ने उसके जीवित रहने की अवधि चंद महीने ही बताई थी।.
1936 में मशहूर गीतकार गुलज़ार का जन्म हुआ था। इनका पूरा नाम संपूर्ण सिंह कालरा है। इनकी मुख्य रचनाएं हिन्दी, उर्दू और पंजाबी में मिलती हैं। गुलज़ार ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत 1961 में निर्देशक बिमल रॉय के सहायक के रूप में की। गुलज़ार ने ऋषिकेश मुखर्जी और हेमन्त कुमार के सहायक के तौर पर भी काम किया। इनके गीत 'ऐ मेरे प्यारे वतन, ऐ मेरे बिछड़े चमन, तुझ पे दिल कुर्बान' और 'गंगा आए कहां से, गंगा जाए कहां से' को बेहद पसंद किया गया। इन्होंने कई फिल्मों का निर्देशन भी किया, जिनमें मेरे अपने, परिचय, अचानक, मौसम, इजाज़त, लिबास, आदि मशहूर फिल्में हैं। 2009 में डैनी बॉयल निर्देशित फ़िल्म स्लमडॉग मिलियनेयर में इनके लिखे गीत 'जय हो..' के लिए गुलजार को सर्वश्रेष्ठ गीत के ऑस्कर पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गया और इसी गीत के लिए ग्रैमी पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया। 2013 में गुलज़ार को दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

1896 में मशहूर शायर फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी का जन्म हुआ था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी को शायर के अलावा एक लेखक और आलोचक के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। महात्मा गांधी के साथ असहयोग आंदोलन में शामिल होने के लिए फ़िराक़ ने प्रशासनिक सेवा से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया था। फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी ने उर्दू में गज़ल, नज़्म और रुबाइयां लिखी हैं, वहीं साहित्य और संस्कृति से जुड़े विषयों पर इन्होंने इंग्लिश में चार किताबें भी लिखी हैं। 1960 में गोरखपुरी को साहित्य अकादमी और 1968 में पद्म भूषण सम्मान से नवाज़ा गया। इनकी किताब गुल-ए-नग़मा के लिए इन्हें 1969 में ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया।
1913 में भोपाल रियासत की राजकुमारी और भारत की पहली महिला पायलट आबिदा सुल्तान का जन्म हुआ था। उपमहाद्वीप की मुस्लिम राजनीति में सक्रिय भूमिका अदा करने वाली आबिदा ने अपने पिता हमीदुल्लाह ख़ान की कैबिनेट के अध्यक्ष और मुख्य सचिव की ज़िम्मेदारी संभाली थी। 1949 में वह अखिल भारतीय महिला स्क्वैश की चैंपियन भी थीं। आबिदा सुल्तान के बेटे शहरयार मोहम्मद ख़ान 1990 में पाकिस्तान के विदेश सचिव भी रह चुके हैं।

1886 में कार का अविष्कार करने वाले कार्ल बेंज ने अपनी पहली कार का पेटेंट करवाया था। 1888 में अपने पति को बिना बताए और अधिकारियों की बिना अनुमति लिए कार्ल बेंज की पत्नी बेर्था बेंज जर्मनी के मानहाइम से प्फोर्जहाइम अपनी मां से मिलने चली गईं। बेर्था बेंज अपने पति कार्ल बेंज के अविष्कार की मार्केटिंग करना चाहती थीं, इसलिए उन्होंने यह कदम उठाया। इसके बाद इस कार ने दुनिया का ध्यान अपनी ओर खींचा। बेर्था जिस रास्ते से गई थीं, वह ऐतिहासिक रास्ता द बैर्था बेंज मेमोरियल रूट कहलाता है। जर्मनी के बाडेन व्युर्टेम्बर्ग राज्य में पर्यटक 194 किलोमीटर लंबे रास्ते पर देख सकते हैं कि कहां बैर्था बेंज ने क्या किया था साथ ही वह दुनिया के सबसे पहले ऑटोमोबाइल की पहली लंबी यात्रा का आनंद उठा सकते हैं। 1962 में हॉलीवुड की मशहूर अभिनेत्री मर्लिन मुनरो का शव बरामद किया गया था। मुनरो का शव उनके लॉस एंजेलेस आवास से ही पाया गया था, जहां वह मृत अवस्था में पलंग पर नींद की गोलियों के साथ मिलीं। डॉक्टर ने अनुमान लगाया कि 'शायद मुनरो ने आत्महत्या की है'। मुनरो के प्रशंसकों ने उनकी आत्महत्या पर संदेह जताया। मर्लिन मुनरो का जन्म 1926 में हुआ था। उनका ज़्यादातर बचपन या तो अनाथाश्रम में बिता या फिर दूसरो के घर में। 1946 में मुनरो ने फिल्मों में अपनी किस्मत को आजमाया और एक साल के भीतर ही उन्होंने 30 बड़ी फिल्मों में काम किया। उनके मरने से दुनिया भर में मौजूद उनके लाखों चाहने वालों को बड़ा धक्का लगा था।

1915 में डॉ. गुरदयाल सिंह ढिल्लों का जन्म हुआ था। ढिल्लों भारत के पांचवें लोकसभा अध्यक्ष थे। इन्हें जीएस ढिल्लों के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। गुरदयाल बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी थे, जिन्हें क़ानून से लेकर पत्रकारिता, शिक्षा और खेलकूद से लेकर संवैधानिक अध्ययन में रुचि थी। सिद्धांतों से समझौता करना, उन्हें बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं था। उनके लिए संसद लोकतंत्र का मंदिर था और इसलिए सभा और इसकी परम्पराओं तथा परिपाटियों के प्रति उनके मन में अत्यधिक सम्मान था। उनमें सभा की मनःस्थिति को पल भर में भांपने की अद्भुत क्षमता थी और उनका दृष्टिकोण व्यावहारिक हुआ करता था। अंतर-संसदीय संघ की अंतर-संसदीय परिषद के अध्यक्ष के रूप में ढिल्लों का चुनाव न केवल उनके लिए बल्कि भारत की पूरी जनता और भारतीय संसद के लिए भी बहुत सम्मान की बात थी। लोगों को शिक्षित करने के उद्देश्य से उन्होंने 1947 में एक पंजाबी दैनिक 'वर्तमान' भी शुरू किया और उसका सम्पादन किया।

1604 में अमृतसर के स्वर्ण मंदिर में आदि गुरुग्रंथ साहिब की प्रतिस्थापना की गई थी। गुरुग्रंथ साहिब सिख धर्म का पवित्र ग्रंथ है। इस ग्रंथ को 'आदिग्रंथ' के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। गुरुग्रंथ साहिब के प्रथम संग्रहकर्ता सिखों के पांचवें गुरु अर्जुन देवजी थे। उनके बाद भाई गुरुदास इसके संपादक हुए। इस ग्रंथ मे कुल 1,430 पृष्ठ हैं। इसमें केवल सिख गुरु के ही नहीं, बल्कि 30 अन्य हिन्दू और मुस्लिम भक्तों की वाणियां भी सम्मलित हैं। गुरुग्रंथ साहिब में जयदेव और परमानंद के समान ब्राह्मण भक्तों की वाणियां भी हैं। गुरुग्रंथ साहिब की भाषा बड़ी ही सरल, सुबोध, सटीक और जन-समुदाय को आकर्षित करने वाली है।
1770 में जर्मन दार्शनिक और वैज्ञानिक जॉर्ज विलहेल्म फ्रीडरिष हेगेल का जन्म हुआ। स्टुटगार्ट में जन्मे फ्रीडरिष हेगेल के घर को अब संग्रहालय में तब्दील कर दिया गया है। यहां साल भर देश-विदेश से पर्यटक और रिसर्चर पहुंचते रहते हैं। इस संग्रहालय में हेगेल के जीवन और काम से जुड़ी ढेरों सामग्री, निशानियां और दस्तावेज संभालकर रखे गए हैं। हेगेल जर्मनी की येना युनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ाते थे। येना पर नेपोलियन की सेना ने चढ़ाई कर दी थी और हेगेल को वहां से भागना पड़ा था। वह अपने साथ केवल अपना प्रमुख दार्शनिक अध्ययन फेनोमेनोलोजी ही ले जा सके थे।

1915 में मशहूर लेखक भीष्म साहनी का जन्म हुआ था। उन्हें हिन्दी साहित्य में प्रेमचंद की परंपरा का अग्रणी लेखक माना जाता है। साहनी आधुनिक हिन्दी साहित्य के प्रमुख स्तंभों में से एक थे। भीष्म साहनी मानवीय मूल्यों के सदैव हिमायती रहे। पाकिस्तान के एक पंजाबी परिवार से संबंध रखने के बाद भी इतनी अच्छी तरह से हिंदी भाषा पर पकड़ होने के चलते कई बार कुछ साहित्यकार उन्हें शक की नज़र से भी देखते थे, लेकिन उनका काम अपनी आवाज़ से सबको किनारे बिठा देता था। भीष्म साहनी ने 16 वर्ष की उम्र में ही लिखना शुरू कर दिया था। सईद अख़्तर मिर्ज़ा की एक फ़िल्म “मोहन जोशी हाज़िर हो” में भी साहनी साहब ने अभिनय किया था। उनकी प्रसिद्ध रचनाएं जैसे 'झरोखे', 'कड़ियां', 'बसंती', 'मैय्यादास की माड़ी', 'कुंतो' में से उपन्यास 'तमस' पर सन् 1986 में एक फ़िल्म का निर्माण भी किया गया, जिसे अतंरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर ख्याति प्राप्त हुई। सन् 1998 में लेखन के क्षेत्र में भीष्म साहनी को पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित किया गया।
