The work of the Austrian painter and illustrator Gustav Klimt, b. July 14, 1862, d. He has been called the preeminent exponent of ART NOUVEAU. Klimt began (1883) as an artist-decorator in association with his brother and Franz Matsoh. In 1886-92, Klimt executed mural decorations for staircases at the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna; these confirmed Klimt's eclecticism and broadened his range of historical references. Klimt was a cofounder and the first president of the Vienna Secession, a group of modernist architects and artists who organized their own exhibition society and gave rise to the SECESSION MOVEMENT, or the Viennese version of Art Nouveau. He was also a frequent contributor to Ver Sacrum, the group's journal.

Among the important decorative projects undertaken by Klimt were his celebrated Beethoven frieze (1902; Osterreichische Galerie), a cycle of mosaic decorations for Josef Hofmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels (1905-09), and numerous book illustrations.

Gustav Klimt honoured with Google Doodle.

Google's latest doodle celebrates the 150th birthday of Gustav Klimt, the Austrian symbolist painter whose work was a cause of controversy for its celebration of sexuality, but which is now counted among the most expensive artworks in the world today.

Born in 1862 in Baumgarten, near Vienna, Klimt was the son of a gold engraver and later became know for the gold leaf which adorned his highly decorated, colourful works produced after he trained at Vienna's School of Applied Art.

As the leader of the Secession movement, a group of Viennese artists who challenged the rigidity of traditional Austrian painting, he emerged as a master marketeer, becoming the only artist in the country to do extensive, authorised reproductions of his own work.

Nevertheless, his eagerness to push the boundaries of propriety met with resistance and, in 1903, he was forced to remove Hope I, a painting showing a naked pregnant woman, from the first retrospective exhibition of the Secession movement.

His most famous painting is The Kiss (1907-08), which reflected his fascination with eroticism in an era when another Austrian, Sigmund Freud, was placing sexuality in the public sphere with works such as his Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality.

Reputedly the father of 14 illegitimate children, Klimt died from a stroke after contracting Spanish flu during the 1918

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.

During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.

Bass designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the AT&T 'bell' logo in 1969, as well as AT&T's 'globe' logo in 1983 after the breakup of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 'jetstream' logo and United Airlines' 1974 'tulip' logo which became some of the most recognized airline industry logos of the era. Google honored Saul Bass by featuring him in a Google Doodle on May 8, 2013.

Jagjit Singh's 72nd birthday celebrated by Google doodle

Jagjit Singh, popular Indian Ghazal singer, is the subject of Friday's Google doodle.

Jagjit Singh was born Jagmohan Singh in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India on 8 February 1941. His musical talent was spotted at an early age and his father encouraged him to learn music from prominent talents of the time. In 1965, at age 24, he decided to head to Bombay to try and make a career in music.

In Mumbai Singh met Chitra Dutta, who was unhappily married at the time. She went on to divorce her husband and married Singh in 1969, paving the way for one of India's most popular singing duets to be united in personal life. The couple started singing ghazals, a form of singing that originated in 6th century Arabic verse. It wasn't until 1976, with the album The Unforgettables, that the couple received any kind of recognition or success.

Ghazal singing is a very old Indian tradition, but it was Jagjit Singh who is credited with taking ghazals to the mainstream audience, beyond its core set of fans. Amongst the earliest popular ghazal singers was Ustad Barkat Ali, but it's likely there were many others before him whose names have not been preserved due to lack of historical records. Later on singers like Begum Akhtar and Ustad Mehdi Hassan took ghazals from classical singing to something that had a wider appeal. Others like Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, Begum Akhtar, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, and of course, Jagjit Singh, followed suit

Douglas Adams, noted author and humorist, is the inspiration behind Monday's Google doodle. Adams is of course best known for his cult classic book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Douglas Adams was on born on 11 March 1952 in Cambridge England. He showed a flair for writing from an early age and went to graduate in English literature in 1974. After graduation, he moved to London with an aim of becoming a TV and radio writer. It was here that we met Monty Python's Graham Chapman, and the two went on to form a writing partnership, albeit for a brief time.

Adams was credited with writing one of the sketches in a Monty Python episode, becoming one of only two people outside the original Monty Python members to be given a writing credit. Adams and Chapman also attempted non-Python projects, but got nowhere and Adams was forced to series of non-writing-related jobs.

While Adams continued to do some writing, his career took off after he got an opportunity to work with the BBC as a radio producer. It was here that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was born as a science-fiction comedy series for the radio. The first series - consisting of six episodes - was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March and April 1978, and received an excellent response. A seventh episode was broadcast on 24 December 1978.

The first four episodes of the series were adapted into the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galax
